On July 1, 2026, CSPD Robbery Detectives requested assistance from the Violent Offender Fugitive Task Force (VOFTF) with the apprehension of 3 suspects who were involved in a robbery earlier this year in Colorado Springs. One of these suspects was identified as Simon Botros, who was known to live in the Denver metro area but also has connections in Colorado Springs. Det. Juan Estrada-Barrera was able to find a location for Botros in the Aurora, CO area and requested assistance from the Denver FBI Rocky Mountain Safe Streets Task Force. VOFTF regularly works with FBI RMSSTF, resulting in multiple arrests of violent offenders. On July 15, 2026, FBI personnel, along with Aurora FAST and SWAT personnel, located Botros in Aurora and attempted to conduct an arrest. Botros attempted to flee on foot, but after a short foot pursuit and a taser deployment, he was taken into custody. VOFTF and CSPD would like to express their appreciation for the assistance provided by our federal and local law enforcement partners in the Denver metro area. @FBIDenver

On June 21, 2026, CSPD received a 911 call reporting a disturbance at the A1 Mobile Home Park, where two males were involved in a physical altercation, with reports that a firearm was involved. Personnel in the CSPD Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) immediately deployed a drone, arriving overhead in just 27 seconds. From the air, drone operators observed and helped de-escalate the situation, including helping disperse a fight before it could escalate further with an individual wielding a knife. Their rapid response and real-time intelligence likely prevented the situation from escalating into more serious violence. Using information provided by the RTCC drone operator, responding officers contacted most of the individuals involved. The subject seen with the knife has not yet been identified, and no charges have been filed at this time. Thanks to the professionalism and skill of our RTCC drone operators, this incident had a positive outcome and demonstrates how highly trained personnel leveraging technology enhance both officer and community safety. She also spoke by phone with her boyfriend later that evening and indicated she was going to a hotel but did not say where. Family reported that she appeared confused during the conversation. Due to extreme fire danger, critically dry vegetation, and multiple large wildfires burning across Colorado, all permitted Independence Day fireworks displays in Colorado Springs have been canceled. This decision was made after careful evaluation by Mayor Yemi Mobolade, the Colorado Springs Fire Department, the Colorado Springs Police Department, and our public safety partners. Current fuel moisture levels in Colorado Springs are comparable to those recorded before the Waldo Canyon Fire, creating an extreme wildfire risk for our community. We know this is disappointing, especially as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the United States and Colorado's 150th birthday. We share that disappointment. But protecting our community, our firefighters, and our first responders has to come first. Our hope is to celebrate together when conditions are safe to do so. COMMUNITY NOTIFICATION OF “SEXUALLY VIOLENT PREDATOR” In accordance with Colorado law the Colorado Springs Police Department is notifying the community that Vernon Eugene Stewart has moved to a new address in Colorado Springs. Stewart is a sex offender whose past behavior has led him to be labeled as a “Sexually Violent Predator” (SVP) by the Colorado Courts. The Colorado Springs Police Department will make all reasonable efforts to ensure that Stewart registers as a sex offender and that he understands his responsibilities as such. Stewart’s criminal history reveals that in 2005 he was convicted of Attempted Sexual Assault on a Child in El Paso County, CO; in 2004 he was convicted in Grant County, WA of 2nd Degree Child Molestation, and he violated parole in 2007. Stewart is currently off supervision and residing at 2912 Concord St #11, in Colorado Springs. He is described as being a white male, 83 years old, 6’ tall, 255lbs, with gray hair, and hazel eyes.
