Former (acting) US exec director to @WorldBank on its new 45% climate finance target: 'There will be enormous pressure to tag financing with a climate benefit, no matter how tenuous the link' What is the current WBG board's plan to address this? 👀

Will @WorldBank's recent #COP28 commitment to allocate 45% of funds to climate-related projects *really* translate into climate action? 🤔 @MathiasenKV expresses her concerns about the credibility of this financing ⬇ bit.ly/3No82RR

The @WorldBank should disclose its detailed climate finance assessments and internal methodology in a way that allows for independent verification of its claims. Otherwise, it is difficult to have full confidence in the Bank’s numbers.

Despite @Oxfam best efforts, due to lack of effective transparency and reporting practices on the @WorldBank climate finance it was not possible to verify about 40%, or $7 billion of what the Bank claimed as climate finance in FY20. 👉rb.gy/o5mjui

New OECD report on #climatefinance shows 2021 growth, but (i) still below $100bn/year promised for 2020-2025, (ii) decreasing $$ for adaptation, and (iii) most finance comes as loans, increasing debt in vulnerable countries. Not the signals #COP28 needs. oecd.org/climate-change…

Israel claims that Gaza's Al-Shifa hospital serves as a command center for Hamas. Norwegian physician Mads Gilbert, who has worked at Al-Shifa for 16 years says there is "no evidence at all" that that is the case. "If it was a military command center, I would not work there."

Protest. Organise. Write to your MP. I know it feels like nothing compared to what needs to change but it is something. Acts of solidarity give us faith in humanity. They want us to give up and feel powerless - don’t let them win. (This is a message to me too)

Some (potential) good news at a very dark time. At the World Bank meetings last week a new indicator was proposed on inequality, against which the Bank's work will be measured. It is one of five core indicators in the Corporate Scorecard.

“Inequality is not inevitable; it’s a political choice. Taxing the richest has intentionally been kept out of global agendas. With its leadership at the #G20, #Brazil can change the course of history by bringing wealth taxes to the table," said @AmitabhBehar.

.@icrict and @Group_of_24 hosted a roundtable on international taxation today in Marrakesh, as part of @IMFNews @WBG_Poverty annual meeting #AM2023 . Here’s the key take aways from our speakers today🧶

"Inequality isn't inevitable, it's a policy choice," said @Oxfam's @AmitabhBehar. "Taxing the richest has been kept out of global agendas, with false arguments. They're trying to make us believe that, in this day and age, everything is possible except taxing the rich." #AM2023

In his #AnnualMeetings plenary speech, Banga underlines that: “We cannot afford another period of emission-heavy growth” Reminder: WB’s own research shows tackling inequality allows for poverty reduction through less carbon-intensive growth.

At #WBmeetings CSO Roundtable with WB EDs, @koendavidse says, “we WANT #civilsociety to be critical and independent of the Bank and tell us what they think of us.” @worldbank must consider civic space restrictions and reprisal risks in its due diligence and stakeholder engagement
