This is the historic moment today when the world decided that a new global tax system is needed, it is possible, and they are going to work for it. At the @UN.

"Good taxation has to attack this growing inequality. [...] it's about fairness, it's about democracy, but its also about economic growth." Nobel Prize-winning economist Joseph Stiglitz makes the case for #WealthTaxes at the recent EU Tax Symposium in Brussels.

Thank you, @Magda_Sepul, Director, @UNRISD, for moderating our panel and for hosting our meeting at the UN Palais des Nations in Geneva. Our previous work together showed how gender inequality is wired in the global economy and how women's unpaid care work functions as a huge subsidy on the global economy.

This week, we took an important step forward in global solidarity. Even in a time of conflict, pandemics, and shrinking aid, we showed that multilateralism can still deliver. Countries North and South are coming together to confront one of the greatest challenges of our era: the inequality emergency. Pleased to join @JosephEStiglitz, @Jayati1609, @GilbertFHoungbo, and more — at the founding meeting of the International Panel on Inequality. Co-sponsored by @UNRISD @UNAIDS @Itamaraty_EN @SpainMFA @norrag.

You are right, Professor @Jayati1609, the historical legacy of colonialism combined with current economic drivers, like deregulation of markets and regressive, outdated tax systems reinforce elite capture of laws, institutions, regulations, & policies — all the things that then keep worsening inequality.

The road to an International Panel on Inequality builds on leadership from 🇧🇷 Brazil and 🇿🇦 South Africa at the G20, who put inequality where it belongs: at the top of the global agenda. Their commitment laid the foundation for what we are launching now — a collective response rooted in evidence, solidarity, and justice. 🔗gov.za/sites/default/…

Thank you, Professor @JosephEStiglitz, for highlighting that inequality is not inevitable, but a matter of choice. It's not the laws of nature that cause inequality. It's the laws of man — and we can change those. Your leadership in progressing the International Panel on Inequality continues to be invaluable.

By year’s end, we aim to officially launch the International Panel on Inequality — a place where governments and experts unite to confront the root causes of injustice. The work starts now — and we are determined. Let’s get to work!

From soaring debt burdens that squeeze health budgets, to illicit financial flows draining $80 billion from Africa annually, the global economy is rigged against the poorest. These forces drive a vicious cycle: inequality fuels pandemics, and pandemics deepen inequality. 🔗 project-syndicate.org/commentary/ine…

Inequality isn’t abstract. I see it every day at @UNAIDS. Girls and young women in sub‑Saharan Africa account for 2 in 3 new HIV infections. Life‑saving technologies exist — but global rules and pharma monopolies keep prices far out of reach. This is inequality in action.

"Beneficial Ownership Transparency (BOT) is a key underpinning component of Anti-IFFs structures we need to be adopting as a continent. BOT is a tool that is a core component of the Anti-IFFs policy tracker but working in concert with other transparency measures to address IFFs." Forslaget om en formueskat får nu opbakning fra en af verdens førende økonomer, nobelprisvinder Joseph Stiglitz. Han kalder det absurd når kritikerne påstår at en beskeden formueskat på 0,5% skulle være farligt for økonomien.

“🇩🇰has proposed a really modest wealth tax on the super rich of 0.5%. There are people who say it would be an economic disaster. It’s absurd. Does anybody think that if you tax Bill Gates by 0.5%, he will stop working?” - @JosephEStiglitz at @EUparliament #TaxMix2050 @EU_Taxud

#dkpol
