@AttoGladys Very sorry. That’s a grumpy personality. You’re doing beautiful work. Don’t think about it.

After an exhausting day, one negative comment can seem like a final straw sending one down a spiral. Such was yesterday when I sat reviewing one elderly lady whose eye I had operated on the previous day. On arrival, she was not able to read any letter now there she was, sitting in front of me reading up to the 6/18 line and saying nothing had changed. In fact, she went outside and made sure we heard what she was telling the other patients out (we operated on 10 of them). “They have basically done nothing”, she said. Honestly, that hurt😭😭 On the other hand, one gentleman whose vision had barely improved because we had a difficult surgery with complications was so grateful. On such days, I always say: “Jesus, what would I do without you?”

@oloo_vicent_ Yes!!!! Keep showing up. It’s 80% of everything. Arriving in Canada in an ice storm this week, wind blew the airplane so it was not level with the disembarking passage. Engineers rushed from everywhere!!

I have a Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering. I am 28. I currently work as a security guard in Qatar. Every morning I put on my uniform and think about the version of me that graduated thinking the world was waiting. Nobody tells you that sometimes the world is not waiting. You just have to keep showing up anyway.

I could not love this more if I tried. Iroko is Milicia excelsa: in East Africa, we call it Mvule. It’s a towering tree compatible w farming. Its seeds r dispersed for 100s of kilometers by bats. Since you are Terraformation, I know you will plant it with many other species! 👏🏽✅

While the Congo Basin’s net absorption has been reduced to 600 million tonnes of Carbon every year, local action to restore the land is happening. We’re helping them with our Iroko Restoration Project in Cameroon.

Native forests are not interchangeable. They are place-based systems. Reforestation succeeds when we honor that specificity.

@Makana_Kennedy So sorry! May her soul rest in eternal peace. She was wonderful to work with. She smiled on everything we did at Straight Talk Foundation @STFUganda and was a blessing to young people, supporting their health and education. #uganda

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of Hon. Geraldine Namirembe Bitamazire who died yesterday evening. The last time this country truly had a Minister of Education, it was Hon. Namirembe Bitamazire. She lived by her speech that she made in Mbale in the mid-2000s, where she passionately emphasized one enduring value: service before self. She lived by it, and she led by example. Rest in peace, Hon. Bitamazire.

When I wrote the “Real Wakanda” @POLITICOMag (2023), I could not have fully imagined the afterlife of the article. Over the past two years, it has sparked an international collaboration and movement that has resulted in sweeping initiatives connected to the Theodore Roosevelt - Africa Trail and the TR Africa Sustainable Development Initiative. Through the visionary leadership of many—including @adoniaayebare @UgandaUN @KenyaMissionUN @AmbAdeng @BesigyeJ4cyiza @MTWAUganda @ugwildlife @UgandaMFA @UgaEmbaWashDC @TrasdInitiative @BenonKayemba1 @TR_Center @TRooseveltAssoc @TRPresLibrary @kahawa1893 @Joshssali @MichaelCullina2—we have seen a historic coffee trade deal (with much more economic development to follow), supporting the rewilding of rhinos in Uganda, the creation of a cutting-edge VR educational curriculum and a virtual trail in Kenya, Uganda and South Sudan, children’s books, and the plan for a remarkable collection of films. In short, this is one of the most sweeping economic and tourism initiatives in Uganda’s recent history. On a more personal note, hosting a conversation between Andrew Roosevelt and Prince Nicholas Basamula @BugandaKingdom_ this past week @ExplorersClub was a career highlight, as I moderated the legatees of Theodore Roosevelt and King Daudi Chwa, who met 115 years ago in Kampala. Having the privilege of learning these two remarkable leaders was something special. Uganda’s diplomats are doing phenomenal work around the world!

The outreach is going super well. So far 120 eye surgeries done. This is the part I enjoy the most— checking vision in the morning. We use ‘E’ letters that face different directions: left, right, up and down. It’s always a beautiful thing to behold and a very fun moment 😍😍. One patient one time instead pointing at the direction with her hand, she kept saying, ‘that one is facing Juba. That one Nabilatuk’😂😂😂 Truth is, I had no idea where Juba was facing so we asked her to show the direction with her hands😂😂😂

In all the 9 primary schools in Abim district that we visited, we patiently checked their eyes, one by one, until the last one. A tiring but fulfilling job. A handful who had eye conditions that require surgery were referred to Moroto Regional Referral Hospital. I basically referred them to myself😂😂. Before the eye check, I took a few moments to give them career guidance. These kids barely get to see and hear from people who can inspire them. I wasn’t shocked that in all the schools, the kids believe the following: 1. Only boys can become doctors 2. Boys cannot be nurses 3. Girls cannot be doctors 4. Girls can only be nurses I’m glad the narratives had changed by the time I left😍. Many girls said they would want to be doctors and many boys nurses. Someone had to speak with them about these things and I’m glad I did.
