Sort of. If you're claiming French inventions then sure. They were really the ones to take engines in planes to another level. If you're talking about warfare, the Italians were actually the first to use them in war, and the first to drop bombs from them. They used modified hand grenades, but it still technically counts. And naturally America was the first to start firing machine guns from them, but the French were the first to use those in combat. Largely because the US wasn't at war yet, and we were trying not to get involved in Europe. The Brits didn't really bring a whole lot of major firsts to the table when it comes to early planes. They were the first to build a plane specifically as a fighter rather than modifying reconnaissance planes, and they were the first to successfully land on a moving aircraft carrier, although Americans were the first to actually take off and land on a ship.

Well we invented planes, so we've pretty much always had a premium on aircraft. Things got pretty tight in WWII, with the British Spitfire, the German Messerschmitt BF-109, and the Japanese Mitsubishi Zero all being excellent planes, but even then the P-51 Mustang and P-38 Lighting were arguably the best of the war. But it really started when the Soviets said they had a new super fighter, so we made the F-15 to beat said super fighter, and it turned out that the Soviets Mig-25 was actually kind of garbage, and we've been somewhere between 20 and 40 years ahead of everybody else ever since. And bombers are an even larger gap. The most advanced bomber on the planet is the B-2 Spirit. It's the only stealth bomber ever in service, and we've had it for 30 years. And we're already testing out it's replacement in the B-21 Raider.
