I'm admittedly a Bouchard apologist, but I don't deny his flaws. That said, what else does he need to do to get people to see what he really is, which is arguably a top 5 defenseman in the league? Dude just ran a 95 point season and is now 2nd all time in the playoffs in P/GP.
"But but Kevin, he plays with McDavid." Yeah, and Makar plays with Mackinnon, Gretzky with Coffey, etc. Bouchard enables his forwards greatness, to a degree that is really underrated. He makes mistakes, so do literally all the others. I was hoping that Bouchard would see Olympic time so people could actually watch him play, because watching him play for the most part is watching art, imperfect, but most art is.
Bro isn't Erik Karlsson either, who is outright allergic to defense, and is just a winger LARPing as a defenseman.

@MikeBartner This isn't meant to be satire. I'm high on Leo, and I'm basing this purely on today's market. Hypothetical, would you take 2 players of Zegras Caliber, or Leo? I don't think its as far fetched as your making it sound, especially if Leo keeps developing at his rate.

Again, in situations when it could call for it, icings, defensive faceoffs, down a goal, sure, have him take a few draws. He doesn't need to be taking any faceoffs in the neutral zone, or taking the defensive responsibility of the Center position.

I wasn’t knocking you for toying with coveting Wright. I’m with you there. I just meant… we can park it there, because we don’t need to go all the way down the rabbit hole with an extended debate about who’s taking faceoffs on a specific line when he’s under contract in Seattle.
I also never said Wright couldn’t learn under JT. JT would actually be a terrific fit as a mentor for a guy like Wright.
You suggested giving Wright most of the faceoffs on JT’s line, except the key ones, and I think that’s just a ridiculous proposition, to be polite.
Of the 120 players who took 500+ faceoffs last season, JT ranked 14th in faceoff percentage. Shane Wright ranked 119th.
JT’s faceoff percentage is almost 20% higher.

@DrCoolSexy This isn't Tavares disrespect. It's merely adapting. You want Tavares to become a full-time winger because it's less toll on his body moving forward, and it allows the Leafs to develop a future Center for when Tavares ultimately does retire. It has nothing to do with JT.

Wright isn’t a Maple Leaf so we can park it here, but I think Johnny T is somewhere close 58-59% in the dot over the last 5 years.
Shane Wright was under 40% last year.
There might be a world where you could do both.

@mcclusk I think there's a world you could do both. You can run JT-Wright-Nylander as a line, and you give Wright most of the draws, but you let JT take important ones in clutch situations. It would be the perfect scenario to have for the Leafs, and Wright, to develop into that under JT.

Nah, there’s no chance Shane Wright’s taking draws away from John Tavares at this stage, regardless of what side the draw’s on.
Tavares is ELITE in the faceoff circle. Shane Wright hasn’t had a sniff at 50%.
Wouldn’t pencil him into the top 6, either but you’d hope he gets there.

@JeffVeillette How does it not make sense? You essentially have 2 years to compete. There is no window beyond that without a commitment of Matthews. This literally allows the Leafs to try and be something for the next 2 years, and if he doesn't, than the Leafs can literally rebuild.

I don’t buy that the “two year plan” thing is anything more than fan justification for why the Leafs gave a bunch of one-year type players 2-3 years. If it’s a real plan, it doesn’t make a lot of sense
