The barrels go brrrrrrrr Just one more proof how useless this whole setup is on the BMPT. Accuracy when firing is NONE, literally none, the guns twitch 2-3 widths of the muzzle break apart. There is no way to achieve good accuracy with this thing and this is only 1 gun firing...

@AnukRathnayake @DropTheSlop @SpaceX Nope, that was just venting. Any puncture in header tanks would mean loss of pressurization, ie - a huge outgassing event and all Starship engines cutting out.

@DropTheSlop @SpaceX ye its probably from the steel underneath as you can see visble leaks from the heatsheild side and it also seemed like the header tank was punctured as there was a fire during landing on one of the drone shots

@grok @RealAlitaGail @Biasin_o @fascinatingonX Thank you @grok - now, why in this post x.com/grok/status/19… you are attributing this picture to be HR 8799 observed in 2008?

@RealAlitaGail @Caemyr @Biasin_o @fascinatingonX Thanks! The image shows HR 8799, the first directly imaged multi-planet system (2008, four gas giants). The linked article covers TYC 8998-760-1, the first such system around a Sun-like star (2020, two planets). Both are key discoveries in astronomy.

The 2008 Gemini release describes the first direct imaging of a multi-planet system: three giant exoplanets orbiting HR 8799, captured via adaptive optics at Gemini and Keck. The image you shared shows those three. A fourth planet (HR 8799 e) was confirmed in 2010 from archival data. This system remains a landmark in exoplanet imaging.

$30 million for 1st stage (with 9 Merlins, with gridfins, legs, bigger hull and tanks, thrusters and hull reinforced for reentry) vs $12 million for 2nd stage (1 vacuum optimized Merlin)? It even could be, very much depends on the Merlin production cost. I see estimations between $1 million and $2 million. May be.

@JaraySzabolcs @xdNiBoR @Gwynne_Shotwell That 10 mln $ price point seems to be pretty spot on, given that SpaceX has most likely optimized 2nd stage to the limit, with even some very exotic savings like running shorter 2nd stage Merlin nozzle, just to save on cost of quite expensive niobium alloy.

Guys, did you notice Gwynne talking about Falcon 2nd stage built from $10 million? Wow, the last (thoight to be optimistic) estimation for 2nd stage was $20 million. This really changes equations❕ Thinking about it, not a real surprise though. SpaceX is known for continous development, optimization (for building processes as well), and the law of big(ger) series in production applies also. @FelixSchlang @david_tamasi @spacestationguy @DanaEn803

@JaraySzabolcs @xdNiBoR @Gwynne_Shotwell I do recall first assessments coming from one event in Barcelona (??) in 2020 (??-ish) during which Elon mentioned that Falcon 9 first stage was 50%-ish of the complete launch cost of a new rocket, second stage was 20%, recovery and refurbishment was around 20% and payload (1/2)

Note Eric’s comment below. Bobby Braun is legendary in planetary atmospheric entry. A lot of people outside NASA don’t understand what a big deal this was. The fear was that firing a rocket inside a fully enclosing “shock bottle” (shock waves all the way around your rocket) would create flow instabilities so you would be unable to control the spacecraft. NASA had planned a giant project to study supersonic retropropulsion (SSRP) including simulations, firing rockets on a train sled, dropping off high altitude balloons, then finally trying it with a real rocket. When SpaceX “successfully crashed” 😏 a booster on a barge for the first time, it immediately proved SSRP flight was stable — because the booster made it to the barge — so NASA canceled its project. It was a truly big deal in pushing the limits for human access to Mars. And it saved the US a lot of money because SpaceX did this on its own dime.
Eric Berger@SciGuySpace

@DrPhiltill It absolutely counts. Good grief. I remember talking to Bobby Braun about this a decade ago and he was just in awe that they had actually gone out and demonstrated this.
