NAP7 - the HEADLINES (not @TheSun version) with @jas_soar... -10,746 anaesthetists taking part in the baseline survey -24,172 activity survey cases over 4 days -881 peri-operative cardiac arrests over 1 year -2.71 million anaesthetic workload cases per year (3 million pre-COVID) -age, obesity and comorbidity all increasing. No such thing as an easy list in 2023! -1 in 18 cases of potentially serious complications which were nearly always rescued by skilled anaesthetists -1 in 3000 cases of of peri-operative cardiac arrest -causes include : major haemorrhage > bradycardia > cardiac ischemia -complications and cardiac arrests more common at extremes of age, operations out of hours and in higher risk patients having non-elective surgery -factors responsible include: patient factors in 82% > anaesthesia in 40% > surgery in 35% -cardiac, cardiology and vascular surgery are high risk specialties -59% alive at the time of reporting. This is much higher than other arrest aetiologies -when anaesthetists experience a cardiac arrest, it impacts their ability to deliver future care in 1 in 20 -recommendations (before/during/after surgery) given throughout the report to improve care for patients and conditions for staff -these data are reassuring for patients! @RCoANews @NAPs_RCoA
