Councils have essentially become social and children's care funding agencies, which, as most people don't use those services, means they don't really understand where all their council tax is going...
Jack Shaw@JackTShaw

In 2010-11 Hampshire County Council spent £381 million on social care - equivalent to 53 per cent of its budget. In 2024, it estimates it'll spend £809 million - equivalent to 83 per cent of its budget. That's unsustainable. From the FT:

The 20,000% spike at £100,000 is absolutely not a joke - someone earning £99,999.99 with two children under three in London will lose an immediate £20k if they earn a penny more. The practical effect is clearer if we plot gross vs net income:

If a 21yo rents a single room in London at today's rate, they will have put more than £100,000 into their landlords bank account by the time they reach their 30th birthday. This is why young people don't have mortgage deposits or pension plans. We are other peoples'.

Great to be at #LPC24 to hear Education Secretary @bphillipsonMP outline her plans for reducing child poverty and breaking down barriers to opportunity - looking forward to engaging with gov on Skills England, the curriculum review and broader plans for tertiary education

@ellasmr Swimming is bad bc spectating at a pool means getting v sweaty and getting a migraine from whistling (speaking frm experience). I think all the canoe/kayak/rowing/sailing is decent bc a) you get to be outside and also b) you’re probably marrying £££ bc they are expensive hobbies

lots of discussion in our household this week on which olympic sports we’d like to WAG for, we’ve decided pretty much any non-running athletics are a great WAG sport because you get to watch lots of other sports at the same time and they wouldn’t get so famous it’d ruin your life

Amazing reporting from Tom Witherow: he tracked down the person who started the rumours that started these riots. She's a mother of three in her fifties who lives in a £1.5m house in Cheshire: thetimes.com/uk/crime/artic…
