We, my husband and myself, were talking to my daughter. Just gisting away, random talk then she brings something up. She said she's never had a crush. For context, my daughter is 11. We asked her why she thinks that is. She says she's not sure, maybe she's too young. And we were like, yea, we think so too. Then she goes ahead and says it's okay cos dating is a sin anyway until she turns 18 so not having a crush now is okay. This is the much I'm going to share. The point of my tweet is that we were elated that my daughter knows this is a kind of conversation that she can have with her parents. And on the other hand, we didn't try to shut her up or scold her. It wasn't necessary. She had a genuine concern and our job as a parent is not to make mountains out of mole hills, like most of our parents did, but to hold our little ones hands and walk with them through life issues. It's very important to listen to their voice, their concerns and not try to shut them down by shouting all the time. Else they'll stop talking to you and start talking to someone else.

Just remembered one time during Residency that we came to OPD for Monday Clinic, and a young lady Dr who just recently started Residency in Int Medicine about 6mths prior, had a mental breakdown and was shouting and screaming on top of her voice. She was abusing everyone and accusing us of being the ones with Mental problem. It was such a sad sight to see because I knew this could have been anyone of us. I quickly urged our other colleagues to grab her and take her to a safe space. All the patients in the waiting area were shocked that a Dr could breakdown like that. It taught me a lot. Seek out your own health as you also treat others. No one is immune to a Mental or Physical Breakdown. Unsurprisingly, someone came and took over her clinic immediately and work continued after 30mins of the display. PHYSICIAN, HEAL THYSELF
