Why is the US Navy slow-walking opening the Straits of Hormuz? An hypothesis that the it centers on maritime shipping, ships, and tariffs more than energy flows. And the US has more options and can use it as leverage as tankers are trapped in the Gulf.

Anybody remember the days of "service"? Pull your vehicle up to those gas pumps, smiling attendants came out and pumped your gas for you, checked the air in the tires, cleaned your windshield and headlights, checked your oil and washer fluid and gave you trading stamps redeemable for nice prizes, and all for way under 50 cents a gallon. The days when we had something called "customer service". Interesting side note: New Jersey is the only U.S. state where it is illegal for drivers to pump their own gas at all stations, a mandate in place since 1949!

@hahussain @mdubowitz Provided there is no external influence. I can see a fractured Iranian leadership so weak that the Saudi's or others in the region take effective control of the govt. or China. Likely the old Iran is dead.

Observations after 14 days of war with the Islamist Iranian regime: 1. The regime is much weaker militarily than expected. It failed to threaten the U.S. at sea, its strikes on U.S. bases caused little damage—perhaps destroying a radar or two—but could not blind America and its allies to Iranian projectiles. Regional interception success rate stands at 93 percent. 2. Iran cannot dominate the region with a seven percent missile penetration rate. It targeted the soft underbelly: civilian areas in Tel Aviv and Dubai. That too failed to twist the arms of America and its allies. 3. The only soft spot Iran found was civilian navigation in the Gulf and through the Strait of Hormuz, much like the Houthis disrupted shipping via Bab al-Mandeb. The tactic is hit-and-run. It can cause disruption, but the world will eventually find alternatives, diminishing the importance of Hormuz (via Russian oil, Saudi rerouting to its west coast, etc.). 4. Iran has no functioning economy and nothing to lose. But this does not mean it can win. Its stamina dropped sharply after the first few days. Like Hamas in Gaza, its rockets will eventually run out. 5. Iran always hoped its blackmail (nuclear program, militias, etc.) would force Western concessions. Any ceasefire will leave sanctions in place on a regime whose economy is already shattered and now further bruised by the loss of Supreme Leader Khamenei and much of its coercive apparatus. Do not underestimate the loss of “Papa Khamenei.” His son is unlikely to be half as savvy—all sons who succeeded strong fathers have proven far weaker. 6. So far, these are the likely scenarios of post-war Iran from most to least likely: a. Regime survives, bruised, broke and isolated, like Iraq's Saddam in 1991. b. Frustrated opposition will try to finish off the regime if it survives the war. This is like tossing a coin and can go either direction. But even if regime prevails, it will be extremely week to project power within Iran, let alone outside its borders. c. Regime falls if the war goes longer and the world tries to supervise transition to a normal Iranian government.
