Detailed coverage of the big story today; breaking down what's likely to be at the core of the Supreme Court's deliberations, potential timeline, and ramifications... ... but be warned, they're not all good. Video tomorrow, my sick kids allowing. calibremag.ca/oic-challenge-…

@X8008135 @MillbrookT That upper isn't 3D printed nor a prototype; they've been making MRR uppers for years. They're referring to the muzzle device.

@Calibremag @MillbrookT I don't know whats worse: releasing a new "assault rifle" platform replacement for C7/C8,while using a C8/A3 lower; or announcing the overpriced contract using a 3D printed prototype upper and in-service lower. I guess just to have the military using the term "assault rifle" now?

If these rifles are being delivered as pictured, with an LPVO, red dot, and most importantly (and impressively), the multifunction muzzle device from @MillbrookT Strategic Sciences, these rifles are going to make a discernible change in the capabilities of Canadian soldiers.
LGen Michael Wright, CCA/CAC@Army_Comd_Armee

Today's announcement is a win for Canada and the Canadian Armed Forces. Rifles remain foundational to soldier effectiveness in the field, and this development brings over 40 years of technology evolution to Canada's fighting forces. 1/3

The CAF needs new rifles, and I'm glad to see a contract awarded. But at a time when we're supposed be building up the Canadian defence sector, I have questions about the disconnect between how large this contract is vs how little economic activity its claimed it will create. 1/

Canada is modernizing the @CanadianForces. The Defence Investment Agency awarded a contract to Colt Canada to acquire up to 65,402 modern rifles under the Canadian Modular Assault Rifle initiative. Learn more: canada.ca/en/defence-inv…

@JankyBowlz @ennerut @CDNPolicyHawk They make nice rifles. But the profit absolutely, definitely goes to its owners, who happen to be the CZ Group - who also make nice rifles, and are quite nice people, in Czechia.

@File780 @MillbrookT Yes, but that doesn't mean the rifle above is the same as a C7 with a can and an LPVO.

@Calibremag @MillbrookT I thought 62,000 psi was the limit for 5.56 . You can run heavy bullets slow and you can run light bullets fast but 62,000 is still the limit. It is still a gas gun vomiting in its own mouth.

@darron Well, the SCC is a coin toss. In some recent years, decisions have favoured the appellant more so than the respondent, but overall, it's pretty much 50/50. The bigger risk is that the LPC fast-tracks a gun bill that renders the whole court case moot.

@Calibremag Yeah - I'm concerned this will just codify what already happened. "Government said it was for public safety so we have to give them the benefit of the doubt."

@Calibremag @MillbrookT So a 5.56 is still a 5.56 . If you put a scope and suppressor on a C7 you get that thing in black.

@Jasonz19191 Participation in the ASFCP is voluntary, and so long as an amnesty is in place, they can't really do anything to get you to hand over your guns besides threaten to cancel your compensation payment. Of course, if the amnesty expires, that changes.

@Calibremag So what do we do when the feds start asking about our guns next week. I declared mine I know not popular but I made my decision. Is that going to get paused or am I going to half to take a gamble and ignore them?

@cheryl1492 @Army_Comd_Armee If they are being delivered as pictured, then between the rifle, the optic, and the *extremely* high-end muzzle device, and the spare parts $10K is an absolute bargain.

The news that 47K firearms have been declared brings the cost incurred by the taxpayer to ~$22,000 per firearm, with basically none of the declared firearms having yet been confiscated nor destroyed.
Public Safety Canada@Safety_Canada

After two months of the Assault-Style Firearms Compensation Program for individuals, more than 47,000 prohibited firearms have been declared across Canada. Deadline to submit your declaration is March 31. See the provincial and territorial breakdown here: canada.ca/en/public-safe…

@jamesbezan I mean obviously that's an insane response from the Minister of Defence, but I also did enjoy @FuhrMP's response in real time lol

This is unacceptable. Either Minister McGuinty didn't know, which is failure of leadership, or he did know and is lying to Canadians. As Minister of National Defence, he is regularly briefed, and has the ability to get briefed as frequently as he requests. This should be his first priority especially when our troops may be in harms way. It appears that once again the Liberals are changing their stories to cover up their incompetence. I will be holding the Minister to account next week in Parliament.

@JoshuaBurton Nope. Having people fill out an online form is easy. Confiscating, shipping, warehousing, securing, verifying, dealing with the inevitable disputes, destroying, and disposing of firearms is way harder.

@Calibremag Per their own website, no individual firearms have been collected yet as they are not verifying declarations until after March 31st. Meaning no compensation has been paid either.

@SportsmanOn No, the SCC is only interested in legality, and compensation (or lack thereof) has no bearing on that.

Important news: The budget for compensation has been slashed by 74%, from a promised $250M to just $64.8M, with no notice given to either existing or potential participants. youtu.be/6EhXUU2OV6w
