The public dislike inheritance tax - strongly. But if I was creating a priority list of taxes to cut, IHT would be towards the bottom. Good tax policy should raise revenue & avoid suppressing economic growth. Compared to other taxes, IHT does this. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…

Parts of London now have as many as 1 in 3 working age people who owe Plan 2 student loans according to new analysis from @OxfordEconomics - and it's having an impact on the economy. Huge variation across the country - in some LAs it's around 1 in 30. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…

2023, Labour promised graduates they would pay less on their loans 2025, it changed the rules so they pay more January 2026, Reeves says the system is “fair and reasonable” Now, the system is “broken” – but not at the “front of the queue" in priorities inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…

@dontdelay They already pay 28/42/47% of those extra earnings in tax no? So extra 9% takes it to 37/51/56%

This shows there’s still a significant earnings premium for graduates So if they have to pay 9% of those extra earnings in an effective graduate tax, it still seems worthwhile. (Although I happen to think most of those people would’ve earned more whether they went to university or not)

Since 2007, real median postgrad salaries have declined by 17% and 12% for undergrads (*before* accounting for student loans!). The narrative of the 2010s was dominated by the status-loss of industrial workers, the 2020s might be the decade of disappointed grads

@billwells_1 Really not one of the main problems I don't think Bill. Very few have the capital available to make voluntary repayments - with other pressures like saving for house deposits etc - and for 70%+ it's not a good idea either.

@CallumCMason Some people will want to pay off their student debt as early as possible. Others will choose to just pay tax based repayments. And all points between For former need SLC to provide guidance to student (& Bank of Mum & Dad because of parental conts) on how best to do this.

Good to see fresh ideas, but idea of extending loan terms is a red flag for me Even if it comes with lower interest or higher repayment thresholds I'm not sure given what's happened in past decade that a future Gov wouldn't just ditch the improvements& keep the terms extended...

💰EXC on student loans⬇️ @GoodGrowthFdn calls on govt to cut repayment rate & extend loan period by up to 10 years OR increase salary threshold to £33k Both options cost neutral & could save some grads up to £400 a year Labour MP @Jas_Athwal says 'it's almost like a scam' 🧵

@PensionsMonkey There has been honesty that a lot won't be paid off, but this is counteracted by many paying far, far more than they borrowed. In fact HMT makes a tiny profit on the latest plan 2 cohort. If a proposal is branded 'cost neutral', need transparency on who winners + losers will be

@CallumCMason There needs to be a reset of the loan terms (interest rate and threshold); there also needs to be some honesty about how much is never going to be repaid - OBR should be writing this off in its fiscal modelling. Some graduates eg NHS should have debts cancelled.

@JackieMayes5 @HugoGye Mortgage rates have come down dramatically in the past three years so even if house prices were going up this wouldn't be true for new buyers. But in parts of the country prices are falling, and even where they're rising in cash terms, it's generally below the rate of inflation.

Housing costs are going down - most dramatically in... London. Mortgage costs are falling (slowly...& TBC post-Iran) + house prices are rising below inflation, meaning the cost of paying a mortgage on an average home is £100s cheaper than it was 3yrs ago. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…

MPs are set to avoid a “pernicious” tax quirk which means high-earners pay a 60% marginal tax rate – even though their salaries will climb to £110k. The contribution rate on MP pensions mean at £110k their taxable pay will slide under the £100k threshold. inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…

Chatted to @nickhillman about plan 2 and the various tweaks being cooked up. Many elements of the scheme have been eroded - maintenance grants scrapped, thresholds frozen. Hillman says that he defends the initial system, but not the changes that have happened since.

Would you rent a house where you weren't allowed to register to vote? That's exactly the requirement given to prospective tenants of this £1,450 a month property in Hertfordshire. Listing now removed after after pressure from @genrentuk & @alistrathern inews.co.uk/inews-lifestyl…
