I am delighted that Michael Winstanley is standing for the Conservatives in Makerfield, he will make an excellent champion of the area having lived in, worked in and represented the local community for years. I know there have been calls from a minority of people for the Conservatives to stand aside in this fight. That will never happen. The people of Makerfield and Britain deserve the opportunity to vote for a party that is committed to reducing the welfare bill, that champions business and understands the perils of nationalisation, that is open and transparent about who it gets its donations from and doesn't try to hide millions in crypto funding. The only party on the ballot in Makerfield that offers that and a clear plan for our country is the Conservative Party, and anyone who supports those values shouldn't hesitate to vote for Michael Winstanley in Makerfield.

Sensible suggestions to help fix the financially disastrous Plan 2 student loans that are trapping a generation of graduates in debt and high taxes. Something I hope the Conservatives adopt. thetimes.com/article/24766e…

Despite all the accusations of inefficiency and incompetence throw at us during last year's local election, ReformUK at @Kent_cc have now admitted that DOGE has found no mismanagement or excessive spending.

The Conservatives must obviously have divides with Reform, as with Labour & the Lib Dems. But the truth is half their 2024 lost voters went to Reform & 23% of their 2024 loyal base now says it will vote Reform. "Ignore Reform" is a suicide strategy.

I understand better than most why Suella was so unhappy at the end of the last Government. I speak as someone who voted against the Rwanda plan because I did not believe it would work without tackling the ECHR in parallel. I warned publicly of the resulting electoral iceberg ahead for the Conservatives and walked a lonely path for doing so. It was a horrible time. In a way, I could understand if that had been Suella’s - or others’ - moment of breaking. But the Conservative Party *did* respond in the autumn of 2024. It elected Kemi as leader and our immigration policy has changed completely. The Party is now committed to ECHR withdrawal and it will be a condition of standing at the next election to support this. Parties have to learn from defeats if they want to earn the right to serve again, and the Conservatives under Kemi have learned. The Party’s programme is already so much more Conservative - from abolishing stamp duty to resetting energy policy to welfare reform. Almost everything has changed in the space of just over a year. Kemi is an authentic Conservative, and who can doubt her toughness or her willingness to face down those who stand in the way of changing the Party she leads? So to condemn the Conservatives so vitriocally now simply does not make sense. Being angry, frustrated and hurt about what went before certainly can be understood. But it’s my strong view that an atavistic desire to burn everything down *when the Opposition has shown itself humbly willing to change* cannot.

My take on the Suella defection:💥👇 Suella Braverman has been vilified for telling the truth telegraph.co.uk/news/2026/01/2…
