@Microinteracti1 Canada is reviewing it's purchase of 88 F-35s. Tensions with Trump and the US has forced the country to look for alternatives. They are contemplating a mixed fleet with F-35s and Gripen from Sweden. The fact that the US controls the software on the F-35s has generated concern.

🇮🇹 Italy Just Told Boeing to Get in the Bin Let’s be clear about what’s happened here. Italy, a country that has been loyally refuelling its air force from American-built tankers for fifteen years, has just written a €1.39 billion cheque to Airbus. Six A330 MRTTs, signed on 16 April, quietly published to the EU procurement portal on 19 May, and absolutely devastating in its implications. This is not a procurement decision. Procurement decisions are boring. Men in grey suits argue about maintenance contracts and through-life costs and nobody outside a defence ministry cares. This is a statement, delivered in the universal language of very large sums of money. And the statement is: we’re done. You have to appreciate the audacity of it. Italy is a NATO member. Italy hosts American troops. Italy has spent a decade and a half operating Boeing’s KC-767, which is, by most accounts, a perfectly serviceable aircraft. There was no catastrophic failure here, no scandal, no tanker that caught fire over the Adriatic. The Italians simply looked at the current state of American reliability, looked at an Airbus catalogue, and made a decision that any sensible person watching Washington in 2026 would probably also make. The A330 MRTT is, for what it’s worth, an exceptional machine. It is larger, more capable, and rather more elegant than what it replaces. But nobody is writing about it because of its impressive fuel offload capacity. They’re writing about it because Italy just became the latest European country to quietly redirect a billion-plus euros away from American industry, and toward the continent it actually lives on. Boeing, meanwhile, continues to have what can only be described as a very bad decade. If you like what you read, follow Gandalv on X: @Microinteracti1

@Microinteracti1 It would be interesting to see a summary of the combined financial losses Trump's new America First policy has actually hit America, both in lost military contracts, lost tourism income and lost trade. And he has only been in office for 17 months

@TimothyDSnyder Jessica's thread is a great example for anyone who wants to practice spotting bots. I don't think I've EVER seen such a concentration of really obvious bots - and that's saying a -LOT-.

You know the Kremlin is panicking when they start warning diplomats to evacuate Kyiv. The last thing Russia wants is a bunch of blown up diplomats on their hands. What do they want? Western politicians and media scared of ‘mighty Russia’ pressuring Ukraine to surrender territory.

This is what imperial arrogance looks like in its purest form. Washington insults Canada, toys with its sovereignty, squeezes its economy — and then sends a diplomat who openly admits he doesn’t even understand why Canadians are angry. “Absolutely no.” Not diplomacy. Not leadership. Just entitlement wrapped in a suit. And that’s the real crisis for America’s allies now: they’re no longer dealing with a superpower trying to persuade the world — but with one increasingly shocked the world no longer automatically obeys.
Gandalv@Microinteracti1

Pete Hoekstra is the United States Ambassador to Canada. A man appointed specifically to understand Canada. Whose entire job, when distilled to its essence, is to comprehend why Canadians feel the way they do about the country directly to their south – the country that just slapped tariffs on their exports, questioned their sovereignty, and suggested they might want to consider becoming the 51st state. And when a journalist asks him, with admirable patience, whether he understands where that frustration is coming from, he doesn’t say “it’s complicated.” He doesn’t say “we have work to do.” He says, with the serene confidence of a man who has never once been troubled by self-awareness: “Absolutely, no.” Absolutely. No. Not just no. He reached into the English language and found the one adverb that makes the answer worse. This is a diplomat. This is America’s official representative to a nation of 40 million people who are currently being economically strong-armed by his boss. His job – his only job – is to understand Canadians. And he has looked that job squarely in the face and said: not today. You genuinely could not find a better summary of current American foreign policy if you wrote it yourself.

@The_Davos_Man This presumably came from the orcish side, I saw a Crybar map about it. Then again he exaggerates a lot to then later claim there has been a heroic orcish counter attack with massive casualties to the Ukrainians. Never know what angle the orcs are working.

The war in Ukraine has real implications for U.S. national security. If Russia wins that war, Vladimir Putin will feel he has the green light to attack a NATO Ally, and President Xi will feel emboldened to move on Taiwan.

SNYDER: Politicians like Trump and Putin obsessed with the past. But with version of the past that never happened. Trump and Putin like to say that in the past everything was good. But then somebody came, immigrants or Ukrainians, and took it all away. It's always same story, and that's not history. Putin is always sure what happened. It's not about evidence, it's about feeling good, it's about defining an enemy. That's why Trump and Putin hate history, in my sense of the word. They don't want historians around. They don't want history taught in schools. What they do is, and Trump does this too, they turn history instruction into moral play about how we're good and other people are bad.

Hoekstra is not a diplomat. That's not his job. He is Trump's attack dog, to apply pressure on Canadians and help prepare the American info space for more coercive or aggressive US acts against Canada. We BADLY need to stop pretending that we don't see the obvious.

The EU has said it will maintain its diplomatic presence in Kiev unchanged, despite Russia's warnings. Well, apparently they've got diplomats to spare and need to trim the headcount.
