These are the top goods producing industries in Canada. Manufacturing did wel in February, but it is in long term decline. It is also down YoY: approximately -3%. Oil, mining, quarry,,construction and retail are the only ones not contracting.

This is the YoY growth of the top services industries in Canada: education and professional services are strugling. Public admin is stagnated. Real estate is at 1% which is historically slow. Only healthcare and finances are doing ok. I don't see these trends changing this year.

@AlbertaLeonidas @GrahamG22047543 Well, according to the payroll surveys (SEPH), Canada already lost 2k jobs in the last 12 months (February data). The LFS has been a bit inflated for a few years, but it is catching up to reality. This is the worst numbers since the GFC and the dot com bubbles (ex 2020).

Here goes the services GDP YoY growth over close to 30 years. It is very similar to 2015/2016 when the economy was on the verge of a recession. 2009 and 2020 were significantly worse.

I will post some GDP breakdown data today. Services is at 1.1% YoY which is the 4th worst growth period in 30 years (2003,2009, 2015). Goods recovered from a dismal 0.4% YoY to a still slow 0.8%. Let's see what March brings. High gas prices probably won't help.

Here goes the best news about today's GDP: while growth was modest, it was mostly via the private sector. The public sector is at 0.34% YoY after a few insane years of debt fueled growth (e.g 5% in 2024).

Surprisingly, the jump in the overall energy prices is less severe than the commodity prices. It probably has to go up another 15% before it blows up the economy. So far, natural gas prices have actually helped keep the total down.

The BoC publishes a weekly index of commodities and energy prices. I see two take aways: significantly increases will push the CPI higher in the short term (April 3.0 YoY?) and demand destruction after that These high levels have not sustained themselves for long.

StatsCan just released the job vacancy data for February: 16k vacancies were added, which is good news. Having said that, there are 1.5 million officially unemployed. That is 3.3 job seekers per job.

@Tablesalt13 The cherry on top: this is one of the worst number in 50 years. Only exceed by a previous crisis: 1982, 90s debt/housing crisis, 2008 GFC and the pandemic lock downs.

@NewTOcondosCA I wish. This is from the more "optimistic" LFS, not the SEPH, but it shows public jobs still growing above 1% YoY.

Canada payroll growth is at 0% (2k jobs lost YoY) for the first time since the pandemic, 2008 (CFG), 1982 and the 90s debt/ housing crisis. Buckle up folks, the economy continues to get worse for workers and the middle class. That is despite record government deficits.

@StephenPunwasi @TomPark1n Always enjoyable to see emerging market "neoliberal" strategies coming to Canada: sell profitable assets for peanuts while squandering the windfall with permanent overspending. We are just missing an IMF bailout in the future.

Breaking! The payroll jobs survey (SEPH) shows that Canada lost 60k jobs in February. More worrying, we lost 2k jobs over a full year while the government overspends $80 billion in fiscal stimulus. Yikes.

Breaking! 🚨 StatsCan just released the February GDP print. It grew at 0.2% MoM (0.12% in my calculation) and 1% YoY. While this sound like a recovery from Q4, I have a hard time feeling that way when the government runs 3% deficit as % of GDP to get 1% growth. Not sustainable.

StatsCan will release the February GDP data tomorrow. I am guessing -0.1% due to negative MoM data for: employment (LFS), weak M2, spike in CPI, negative merchandise trade balance and population. I think only government GFCF can possibly push tomorrow's GDP above zero.

StatsCan will release the payroll data tomorrow (SEPH). It has been very slow since 2025, but had a strong January print. My guess is that it will be negative in February and barely above zero over 12 months.
