“a war of ideas, a battle of principles … a war between the old and the new, slavery and freedom, barbarism and civilization... There was a right side and a wrong side in the late war which no sentiment ought to cause us to forget.’” — Frederick Douglass, Memorial Day 1878 2/n

I can’t hold back anymore on the state of Kentucky Basketball. It’s April 15th, things can change fast, but as I sit here right now, what in the world has happened? Seriously! We opened yesterday with intel, scooped insiders feeling “really good” about the two visitors. Rob Wright, Tyran Stokes. I dont know how you dont interpret anything that’s happened over the last 24 hours other than these kids, families, agents, circles, whatever, dont like Mark Pope. And the more time they spend with him, the more disinterested they are in KENTUCKY! It’s now been a full calander year. The only player he has signed in highschool, portal, anything, is Mason Williams, a 100+ ranked freshman PG, WHOS DAD IS NOW ON STAFF! This is a disaster of what’s going on in the portal. And I dont think I’m being aggressive or dramatic at all by saying that. AFTER COMING OFF THE GREATEST FRESHMAN CLASS WEVE EVER SEEN IN COLLEGE BASKETBALL, AND KENTUCKY HAD NONE OF THEM! HOW DOES KENTUCKY NOT GET LITERALLY ANY OF THEM? Keep in mind, we’ve just got “out bid” or “same offers” TWICE in the last week from BYU for starting level players WHO MARK POPE LITERALLY GOT HIRED FROM. And regardless of how you want to frame it, that’s not good for Kentucky. They dont have the money for priority targets? Screw the “better allocation of funds” mindset. It’s KENTUCKY. Kentucky had the highest payroll in the sport last year. But they dont this year, why? Probably because we just had it last season, AND IT WAS A DISASTER! Kentucky wasted all of that money on bad players and injured players, and then did nothing with the roster, and everyone couldn’t wait to get out of the program, and nobody other than the HC, and the loyalty of the rest of the staff, dont believe in you or the direction of the program to write the same checks that were written a year ago. A massive check on the table for Tyran Stokes, and yet it seems like HE STILL DOESNT WANT TO COME HERE. It’s just hard for me to fathom or accept in two years this is what KENTUCKY BASKETBALL has currently turned into. You’ve likely pissed off Zoom Diallo and now you have to rebuild that relationship because he visited, and then you left him in the dust to go try and get Rob Wright. That failed, and now you have to make up with him. Donnie Freeman, for all we know, will leave campus after his visit and head to UConn and commit there. I mentioned it in a groupchat I’m in, I said there’s a better chance Kentucky goes 0/4 than 4/4. And look how we sit right now as I type this. This isn’t a JMI issue, stop with that. This is an issue of Mark Pope seemingly can’t relate to these kids. There’s some type of disconnect from kids and this staff in recruiting. Again, in over a year he’s signed one new player into the program, and it’s Mason Williams, whose dad joined the staff. This is literally shaping up to be the exact same scenario as last year. Missed on all of your first options. You’re late to all the second options because you haven’t contacted them or they’re already committed elsewhere. Now we have to settle for the third options. Except there’s no Otega Oweh to come save your butt late in the cycle by pulling his name out of the NBA draft. Okay, now I’ll stop ranting. Kentucky HAS GOT TO do whatever they can to make up with Zoom Diallo, get him committed. Do whatever they can to get Donnie Freeman committed. Keep working, pushing, whatever to get Stokes here. Get some other guys to fill the rest of the roster, and then we’ll see what happens on the court this year. But the way this is shaping up right now, at this current moment, has DISASTER written all over it. #BBN #KentuckyBasketball

@FastbreakHoops5 This is Gen Z's version of Duke vs. Kentucky. Other than Anthony Davis, these guys were all losing players in college. Karl-Anthony Towns is the only other one who's even been to the Final Four.

And I love Alex Wilkins…he was best small college player I watched last year (granted I didn’t see them all). He popped out as a guy who can be a big time scorer I don’t think UK could have afforded him with Wright. If they can now, they will have a very good backcourt combo

If I'm Ken Griffin (@leddalhlwee), I'd cancel all hiring and growth plans in NYC and immediately call out @ZohranKMamdani as the reason. Ken: "Message Received" these communist lunatics. Do it for the Union!
Sara Eisen@SaraEisen

Ken Griffin employs thousands of people in NYC and is planning to build the tallest office tower on Park Ave., investing billions more and creating thousands more jobs. (For that reason, he’s also here in NYC a lot, @NYCMayor) Meantime Miami is welcoming him and his firm, with the massive jobs, investment and tax revenue he’s bringing. Making him feel unwelcome and demonizing him seems risky. Ken left Chicago and moved Citadel hq to Miami a few years ago because of bad policy. (He also sold his penthouse there)

⬇️In which @JamesSurowiecki proclaims his intellectual superiority to James Madison on Constitutional matters. Madison’s document intended to protect the less populous states from domination by the more populous states partly by giving them slightly more voting power.
James Surowiecki@JamesSurowiecki

There's no good civic argument for the electoral college. It was arguably necessary to ensure the ratification of the Constitution, but it's an anti-democratic device that gives some American citizens far more voting power than others, based purely on where they live.

I supported the war to remove Hamas from power after October 7th, but Israel's supporters have got to own up to the fact that, barring something unexpected happening this was far worse than any of the United States' wars in the Middle East.

Ex ante, I would have said that it would be very difficult for the United States to lose a war with Iran. Yet Trump—somehow—seems to have managed. A postwar state of affairs that is vastly worse than Obama’s JCPOA that he broke seems to be the best kind of Pyrrhic victory... 1/

@JamesMelville The closure of the Strait improves the relative position of the US v. its competitors. The US needs very little of what passes through it. Its competitors, however… And its enemy, Iran? It is dependent on it.

@CancellationCh1 @HeathMayo @DerekPederson3 Just a quick correction. We do know. It was widely investigated in depth at the state and federal level at every claim of fraud and oddities. There was nothing, it was verified. Trump lost. The end.

@B_Ehrfurth @RedArkGuy @DouthatNYT You have to be blind to see that the idea of preferring and deprecating specific identities is antithetical to the liberal idea of equality-before-the-law regardless of which identities are preferred and which are deprecated.

@CancellationCh1 @RedArkGuy @DouthatNYT Plus you'd have to be godlessly stupid or a shameless propagandist to think that minority group identity politics and white majority identity politics are the same movement or group of people. Are Israelis and Hamas the same group because they're identitarian (Jews vs Arabs)?

The results in Hungary tend to confirm one of my strongly-held views, which is that terms like "illiberal democracy" can be usefully descriptive but the phrase "competitive authoritarianism" is just a contradiction in terms. x.com/zackbeauchamp/…
Zack Beauchamp@zackbeauchamp

Hungary under Orbán was not a classic fascist or monarchical regime. It was a species of what political scientists call "competitive authoritarianism" — where elections are generally free, meaning not formally rigged, but held under extremely unfair conditions.

@B_Ehrfurth @RedArkGuy @DouthatNYT Conservative is not a US political institution. It’s the political equivalent of “uncool”, a meaningless label. The US Democrat party has transitioned from its egalitarian labor era back to being Identitarian and the party of the rich as it was in the mid-19th century.

@CancellationCh1 @RedArkGuy @DouthatNYT Newsflash: Trump and Bannon love Andrew Jackson, founder of the Democratic party. Left-liberals tend to think he was evil. Today's KKKers and Confederate whites vote GOP. Liberals = Democrat, conservative = Republican is a relatively new development, doesn't apply to 1868

At the World Economic Forum, Trump claimed China makes renewable equipment but doesn’t use it. Reality: Over the past few years, China’s growth in wind and solar usage has exceeded the rest of the world COMBINED. TRUMP'S RHETORIC RARELY MATCHES REALITY.
