We knew that this year, as an organization, we wanted to expand our geographical reach in order to support more musicians and create new volunteer opportunities. So we ventured to Detroit, home to so many great songs and musicians, and did a recording there with @makpal (Mark Paul). We met so many generous folks, and as often happens in the music community, those who we met thought of others. That's how we discovered Rio Scafone, our 60th Cancer Can Rock Featured Artist. Julianne Ankley (@JulianneAnkley ), one of our first Detroit volunteers and herself an accomplished musician, knew Rio as the amazing, thoughtful, soulful, giving, no-nonense powerhouse she proved to be during her visit to our studios (and since!) Rio's music is undeniable, as is her energy. Those who have been in a room with her feel better for having done so. We couldn't have chosen better than Rio as the person who helped us complete our 5th compilation album (available at cancercanrock.bandcamp.com/music) and you'll understand why after hearing her song and watching her interview. Friday, April 5 will mark a very big day for Cancer Can Rock. First, it lets us introduce you to our latest - our 60th - Featured Artist, Rio Scafone of @RockabillyRio (Rio & the Rockabilly Revival). Rio's energy, talent, generosity and spirit are all on display in her song "Train to Glory", which will debut on our YouTube channel at 12 PM, and then be available for download both as her own single on her Bandcamp page, and as part of our fifth compilation album. You'll also be able to purchase songs from our 59 other Featured Artists, and because April 5 is an official "Bandcamp Friday" - ALL proceeds go to the charity and/or artist, with @Bandcamp not taking their normal percentage. Artie Amici has a lot to say. Throughout getting Artie into the studio to record his song, we were in constant communication relating to the tune, some of his history, and the process, and it seemed Artie always had a story to tell that was appropriately related. This is a man who has said "Sure, why not?" to many opportunities in life, including this one, and as a result, is quite the raconteur. This song, as he discussed in the interview available on our YouTube channel, is about someone related to one of the many interesting chapters in Artie's life. Growing up in Central Pennsylvania, Mark Brown has been writing songs since the age of 6 when he would listen to AM radio on his Six Million Dollar Man radio. He started playing musical instruments at age 9, starting with the cello. When his parents realized he was playing his cello ‘sideways’ (because he wanted to play bass guitar), they gave in, and Mark has been playing and recording ever since. Mark chose this song because it was his kids' favorite and he wanted to make sure that they'd have a version of the song they could carry with them forever, leaning into the Cancer Can Rock mantra "Because Music Lasts Forever." We often hear that the songs and videos created for Cancer Can Rock Featured Artists is a wonderful gift for their families. Working with DrDejuanna Parker ("Dee") and her family was a unique experience for all concerned. Not only was Dee's family present during the recording, they ended up as participants! Dee's son, Mike (@musicbymikep ) lent his considerable vocal and songwriting skill to the process, and Dee's husband chipped in on saxaphone as well, making this day one that Sly and the Family Stone would be proud of. Dee brought her sunny personality, loving nature and seemingly endless energy into the day, providing a space that could only be deemed "Dee-Light-Full". You may know Mike Parker (@musicbymikep ) from his appearances on @NBCTheVoice and @AmericanIdol - but you haven't met his Mom, Dee, or his Dad, also called Mike (junior is called "Michael" when Dad's in the room). No matter what language you speak, the statement "Music Lasts Forever" is true. This #MusicMonday we're sharing our previous video post of the song that Jim Ebert wrote along with Todd Wright to describe his own navigation through facing cancer. Realizing the universality of the message "We're Not Promised Tomorrow" and inspired by the great work done by the Venezuelan video team that provided the video for the song, we enlisted Daniel Gomez of Perro Sombra to both translate and sing the Spanish version of the song. Daniel put so much love and care into not just translating, but translating in a way that felt like the song was written in Spanish to begin with - not an easy task, but an example of the love and effort that so many of our contributing artists and supporters have given us.
