🚨 After a couple of years in the making, in collaboration with a team of global leaders across both #cancer survivorship and mental health, I’m pleased to see that a cornerstone paper in our program of research in psycho-oncology has now been published (open access). 📃 onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/po… ❗This paper reports what we understand to be the most comprehensive phenotyping of #psychopathology in cancer survivors to date, and the first comprehensive application of the @HiTOP_system Hierarchical Taxonomy of Psychopathology (HiTOP) to cancer. Data from HiTOP Self-Report (as well as a range of other measures) were collected from 728 cancer survivors (n = 155 currently with cancer, n = 573 who previously have had cancer) across 28 different countries, as well as 661 people from psychiatric and general populations. 🔦 Highlights: 1️⃣ People currently with cancer experience elevations in a broad array of psychopathology, including in domains that are not commonly within psycho-oncology practice and research. 2️⃣ People who previously had cancer had far fewer elevations in psychopathology, though a meaningful proportion still do experience clinically significant elevations in numerous domains. 3️⃣ A dimensional model of psychopathology derived from a HiTOP measure can be meaningfully applied to cancer survivors – though cancer-related experiences and effects should be considered when interpreting the meanings and nuance of factors and factor scores in cancer survivors. 🗝️ Key takeaway: Mental health challenges in cancer survivorship are broader, more complex, and less well captured by current assessment approaches and diagnostic models than we may think—the #HiTOP framework has the potential to improve psycho-oncology clinical practice and #research, and now requires further use and assessment.
