If education is really “all about the kids” then why do we: *limit physical activity, play time, the arts, socialization *focus on standardized tests as success * give students little voice/input into learning * focuses on their weaknesses not strengths

Children with dyslexia are very likely to struggle copying from the board. Would you tell someone who needs glasses : “ I need you to practice seeing without your glasses so your vision is strengthened?” No, you would not say that…right? #copyofclassnotes

Years ago when I first started teaching I can remember saying, " All I asked him/her to do was copy what I wrote on the board." I did not realize how hard this can be for many students. If only I could go back... #KnowBetterDoBetter #UntilEveryChildCanRead #PKVProud #SSD200

Repeat after me: Small group is a setting accommodation, not an intervention...Just putting kids in small groups is not an instructional intervention. It just isn't...sigh..

Standardized testing, especially in elementary level, is not only a massive waste of time and money, but has little to no impact on student learning.

Long vacations rarely cure burnout. They usually bring temporary relief. The frequency of time off from work matters more than the duration. 2 separate week-long vacations are more restorative than a 2-week trip. Regular breaks are vital to well-being. tedtalks.social/WLAdam

We did PBIS at my old school and every class had the How Was Your Day charts + the kids had a calendar and at the end of the day we'd have to stop 5 minutes early so they could color in their chart with what color they were on for the day. I wish I could apologize to those kids.

Teachers, want to take something off your plate? Put HW in the trash, especially for elementary grades. Let students go home to run, play, and enjoy being a child. And read a little after playing. Then they come to school recharged instead of stressed out and you will too!

6 tips to reduce stress of staff. 1) If you ask to meet with staff member, let them know why. 2) Don't address an issue you have with one person with the whole staff. 3) Praise a lot more than you critique 4) Fewer meetings 5) More encouragement/support 6) Encourage self care
