I love working hard on complicated projects, but if I get a spade in my hands, I'm making it my mission to out-dig everyone around me.

The Unsung Heroes of Public Safety: The Evolution of Plumbing Systems Imagine a world where the simple act of drinking water or using the restroom could be a health hazard. This was a reality not long ago, before the evolution of plumbing transformed our public health landscape. Today's article dives into how plumbing systems have been pivotal in safeguarding public health. Here's how plumbing systems ensure our well-being. From Epidemics to Eradication: Plumbing's Role in Public Health The Historical Context: Disease and Sanitation: Before modern plumbing, diseases like cholera, typhoid, and dysentery ran rampant due to poor sanitation. The introduction of sewer systems and clean water supply in urban areas was directly responsible for significant drops in mortality rates. The London Cholera outbreak of 1854, famously linked to a contaminated well by Dr. John Snow, underscored the urgent need for improved sanitation. Public Bathhouses to Private Plumbing: Moving from communal baths to individual home fixtures meant that hygiene could be maintained more effectively, reducing the spread of infectious diseases. This transition was pivotal in altering the public's health landscape. Modern Plumbing: A Bastion of Safety Ensuring Safe Drinking Water: Lead-Free Pipes: The shift from lead pipes to safer materials has been crucial. Lead in water can cause severe health issues, particularly in children. Modern regulations and materials ensure that what comes out of our taps is safe for consumption. Water Filtration and Treatment: The existence of water treatment plants that remove contaminants before water reaches our homes is a testament to how plumbing systems are designed with safety in mind. The infrastructure behind clean water is vast, from filtration to chlorination, ensuring that pathogens are kept at bay. Sewer Systems and Waste Management: Separation of Waste: Modern sewer systems separate waste from clean water sources, preventing contamination and the spread of disease. This separation, often an underground marvel, is critical in urban environments where space and safety are at a premium. Backflow Prevention: Devices that prevent contaminated water from flowing back into clean water supplies are now standard. This is a critical safety measure, especially in areas prone to flooding or where water pressure can fluctuate, ensuring that public health isn't compromised. Plumbing and Emergency Preparedness Fire Protection: Plumbing systems are integral to fire safety through hydrants and sprinkler systems. In emergencies, a well-maintained plumbing system can mean the difference between a contained fire and a disaster. Disaster Resilience: After natural disasters, intact plumbing can provide clean water and sanitation when it's needed most, preventing the outbreak of diseases in relief settings. The robustness of modern plumbing designs, like earthquake-resistant piping, showcases how these systems are engineered for safety in all conditions. Public Safety Through Regulations and Maintenance Regulations and Standards: There are stringent codes that plumbing must adhere to, from installation to maintenance, ensuring that safety isn't compromised for cost or convenience. These standards are the unsung heroes of public health, dictating how plumbing can protect us. Regular Inspections and Maintenance: The role of plumbers in maintaining these systems cannot be overstated. Regular checks prevent leaks, cross-connections, and other hazards that could lead to health emergencies. Conclusion Plumbing is far more than pipes and fixtures; it's a critical component of public safety infrastructure. By focusing on how these systems protect us from disease, ensure clean water, and prepare us for emergencies, we highlight their indispensable role in our lives. Let's not take for granted the silent guardians beneath our streets and in our homes. What's the most overlooked aspect of plumbing safety in your community?

I'm yearning to take a backpacking trip. I've slept under the stars at some pretty cool places in Texas - Enchanted Rock, Big Bend, Guadalupe, Hueco Tanks... to name a few. Where in Texas should I explore next? The farther from civilization the better.

"And what AISD is doing with their students, I just met with AISD yesterday. We have a monthly meeting with them. We talked about their walkouts. They have several planned throughout this month. So we are in coordination with them. If we have to help with traffic we'll do those things and we are in coordination with AISD as well" APD Police Chief Lisa Davis (February 5, 2026)

UPDATE: Library shooter Harold Keene operated under the name "Harold King" for 35 years of arrests and convictions. Court records show prosecutors changed their approach to his cases after 2021. Under “Harold King,” his record stretches back to 1990: cocaine possession, weapons charges, assaults, tampering with evidence, and a 14-year prison term for family violence. He spent decades in and out of prison. Then, after his 2021 release — when DA José Garza and County Attorney Delia Garza took office — the pattern changed. Felonies became probation. Violence became “treatment.” •2021: Stole two vehicles — served 90 days each, where the law allowed two years. •2022–2023: Drug and evading charges dismissed. •2023: Meth (4–200g) and gun possession as a felon — both got 10 years probation. While still on probation, in 2024, Keene punched an inmate in the Travis County jail, breaking his nose. Prosecutors dismissed the charges, which was caught on video, citing that he was “receiving treatment through felony probation.” By April 2025, Keene was threatening strangers on a Cap Metro bus, then pulling a revolver on one of them outside a staffing office on Airport Blvd. The victim ran; prosecutors filed only a Class B misdemeanor for terroristic threat. Six months later, still on probation and with an active warrant, Keene walked into the Austin Central Library and opened fire. For three decades, Austin courts cycled him through prison. For the last four years, they just cycled him back onto the street.

AUSTIN — In just one week, the city has seen a machete fight erupt outside City Hall and two separate shootings — one on a city bus, another inside the public library — all involving homeless suspects.

[RG911Team] This skyscraper in China did not collapse despite fires on almost every floor. So why did WTC7 suddenly collapse at free fall on 9/11 when it had fires on only a few floors?

Seems to me like the tax payers are slaves to the welfare recipients. People get on it and then they won't get off because it's free money. Some then supplement that income with crime so that they can have unreported income. The tax payers are slaves to this broken system. Under threat of imprisonment tax payers are required to pay taxes to fund the welfare of criminals in their communities. That's more other modern day slavery in my mind because slavery is also enforced by threat of imprisonment. At lease welfare recipients have a choice, even if it's a bad one, because removing yourself from welfare does not constitue a crime but not paying taxes does. I just don't think it's fair to say these poor people are slaves because it disempowers them and makes them into victims while at the same time dismisses the importance of the resources put into that system by tax payers who are forced to commit time and effort from their life to fund it. Slavery?!?This particular stance seems to me to offenend all people involved no matter how you look at it. Furthermore, it's somewhat demeaning and disempowering to elevate people based on their victim status. I would encourage people to seek attention by the thinks they do and not by the things that are done to them. If the system is broken, then fix it but the people that volunteer to be in the system are not victims of it. I just can't agree with that claim.

The way the programs have created complete government dependency is modern day slavery. Your absolute right, the government should empower people to participate in the economy. Yet, Some neighbors are several generations born into the projects at this point, they don’t know anything different, and they don’t work, they are incentivized not to with free food and free housing.

LBJ’s so-called “War on Poverty” has devastated Black and Brown communities for generations. I know when I come up to UT, some see me as the enemy, but I will not stop exposing the truth. 📷 I will keep showing up! Can’t stop. Won’t stop. It’s time we start questioning these failed policies instead of blindly believing what we’re taught. I CURRENTLY live in the projects. I see it firsthand. This is modern-day slavery and it must end.
