OpenSea has officially ended the Treasure Chest Rewards program As someone who has consistently traded NFTs for 5 years, I enjoyed the rewards program. I was getting prizes for something I'm already doing, similar to earning miles for flying So for me, the airdrop was the bonus, not the main driver (I obviously want a fat airdrop as well) However, having a Treasure with level-ups linked to an airdrop drove speculation, and some people treated it as an airdrop farm, burning fees at a loss I hope to see a rewards program in the future built for traders who organically use the platform, with prizes, discounts on fees, cashback, etc.

I think about this a lot, so let me vent for a sec. There's so many powerful financial tools and services onchain now (lending, yield, RWAs, ETFs, etc) but education is lagging. Like what are we doing? Providing these services to institutions and boomers who already have access through legacy financial systems? Young, internet natives need help using them safely and effectively. Remember early(ish) Bitcoin days? Most of the content had depth. Network fundamentals, game theory, monetary history, how things worked behind the scenes. As a young person I learned more about money and incentives from the internet than I did in school. Bitcoin genuinely expanded worldviews and made BUILDING wealth (not getting lucky) feel accessible. Now the space has been hijacked by attention driven, short term grifts. Great if you're doing this for funsies or a shoutout from your niche internet personalities brings you enough joy. But zoom out and who is really benefitting from this? It's formulated to condition the new class of crypto to be gamblers, beggars, indentured servants, and exit liquidity. I would LOVE to see platfroms and protocols invest a portion of their marketing spend on education. Arguably thats how you sustain long-term users. You did your initial metrics pump to close that raise, the company is going to survive another cycle. When focus on pushing foundational content over hype?

@SteveKBark Information, tech and overall life move a lot faster now than they did when websites were built There’s more pushback with AI than NFTs today but that hasn’t stopped adoption and people creating sustainable businesses

That’s akin to saying that websites and the internet were a failure in 2000 because we had spent 5-7 years with companies integrating them, the market crashed, and use cases were slow and didn’t work. Or cell phones failed on the mid-90’s after years of bad infrastructure and high priced plans. I could go on, point here is we’re so close to it when most normal people don’t know what an NFT or the blockchain is, let alone how it’s used.

IMO it’s not about replacing “NFT” with “digital collectible.” It’s about replacing “NFT” with what the thing is. A ticket. A sports card. A membership. People didn’t replace “MP3” with “digital music.” It’s Spotify, Apple Music, or the song you’re listening to.

Well that’s not why Starbucks shut down (I know because I worked on the program), but I’m not certain we’re even talking about the same thing now. I don’t say anything about the NFT market as it exists today, or new people buying, I’m simply saying like all other tech words “NFT” will fade into the background. When your ticket is an NFT you won’t say “hey let me grab my NFT” just like you don’t say “hey let me grab my QR code” today.
