I am hugely excited about the Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann coming to Belfast for the first time in less than a fortnight. Today I had the pleasure of being hosted in Áras an Uachtaráin by @PresidentIRL along with Ard Mheara @RoismairedSF to mark the occasion of the Fleadh coming to Belfast. I am looking forward to a really uplifting week of Irish music, dance, culture and craic starting Sunday 2nd August 🎶💚

Glad to welcome the Economy Minister @CArchibald_SF to Strabane to meet with local businesses. The rising cost of doing business as well as the changing attitudes of consumers is impacting on town centres. Good to hear commitment on regional balance & supporting businesses.

We can never accept burning effigies of political representatives, flags or symbols as normal. In any other part of the world, this would be unfathomable and unacceptable. It should be no different here. This is hatred, rooted in ugly sectarianism and racism. Last night, effigies of political representatives, including myself, were placed on bonfires, surrounded by flags and emblems. Those responsible have nothing to offer except fear and division. But they will not succeed. I will not let hatred dictate our future. I will continue to build a future where all our children grow up free from hate.

Tonight our community came together to take a stand against racism. We took a stand for compassion, solidarity and support shown to those affected. Together, we stand against hatred and division in all its forms. We know this lesson from our own history!

I am delighted to learn that the Cypriot Presidency has proposed direct funding for Peace Plus in its "negotiating box" as part of the next long term EU budget. The Irish Presidency must deliver on this proposal. I will make sure the EP continues to support Peace Plus.

I am disappointed for the thousands of workers who will benefit from the Good Jobs Bill that it did not progress at today’s Executive. This Bill includes important rights and protections for workers that will improve their working lives and work-life balance. It was my preference that the Bill would pass to the Economy Committee in advance of summer recess to give it maximum scrutiny time but for the avoidance of doubt, there is plenty of time remaining in this mandate for this legislation to be properly scrutinised and passed. I remain committed to working with all parties and partners as the Good Jobs Bill progresses to ensure it works for all.

somehow managed to get both the Belfast pogroms in 1920 and the burning of Bombay Street into an 800 word article for the Independent i wanted to make a very clear connection between what we’re seeing happening to ethnic minorities in Belfast and across the six counties with the experiences of our parents and grandparents living under the repressive auspicious of the orange state mostly because I wanted to remind people who might be lured into the traps of racist ideology that our history, and the history of our people, is very much structured by an opposition to those same mechanisms of oppression i knew when all this kicked off that people in West Belfast wouldn’t take the bait, that the anti-colonial, anti-racist politics that runs through the collective consciousness is too firmly ingrained (also fuck the loyalists and their bigotry etc)… but that’s not to say that this can’t change, that the very marginal voices sowing hatred in the community won’t find a foothold (they already have, in all sorts of ways) i basically wrote this article for the people of West Belfast, to reassert our radical opposition to the bigotry and racism that underpins loyalism and make sure that the people who have come here to build lives for themselves know they are not alone, that they won’t be abandoned the way our parents and grandparents were, and that we stand by them in love and solidarity independent.co.uk/voices/belfast…
