Heinlein As we have been finalising the #NCW2026 Impact Report. I’ve been reflecting on the incredible energy, opportunity, and inspiration shared throughout National Careers Week. NCW is about bringing together schools, colleges, employers, and communities working collectively to support and guide the next generation. Year 9 students from @HealingAcademy1 recently stepped out of the classroom and into the future of construction during an exciting visit to the Sewell Group Digital Construction Academy as part of #NCW2026 Throughout the day, students explored how cutting-edge technology, 3D design, digital modelling, and innovation are transforming the construction industry and creating new career opportunities. They had the chance to see first-hand how creativity, problem-solving, and technology come together in real-world projects helping bring buildings and ideas to life before construction even begins. The visit gave students a valuable insight into the wide range of careers available within digital construction, from architecture and engineering to project management, design, and emerging tech roles. It was fantastic to see our students asking thoughtful questions, engaging with professionals, and beginning to imagine what their own future pathways could look like. Most importantly, the experience encouraged our young people to think big, explore new possibilities, and continue Owning YOUR Future! #WorkExperienceMonth coming up this July, this visit was the perfect opportunity to inspire students to start thinking about their next steps, future ambitions, and the skills they can develop along the way. Can Music Change Society? Part of our National Careers Week series exploring music across disciplines Music reflects who we are. Across different cultures, time periods, and communities, music has been used to express identity, challenge ideas, and bring people together. Let’s explore how music connects to society, culture, and change. 🧠 Big Question Can music influence the way people think or even change society? 🎯 The Idea Music has often played a role in important social and cultural movements. It can reflect people’s experiences, communicate ideas, and shape how groups of people see the world, from protest songs to national anthems. This is where music connects to areas like history, sociology, politics, and cultural studies, showing how it can influence not just individuals, but whole societies. 🔍 Try It Out 🎥 Jazz Music in the Cultural Cold War Explore how jazz became a tool of cultural influence during the Cold War — shaping ideas of freedom, identity, and power. 🎥 How Did Aretha Franklin Inspire the Civil Rights Movement? Discover how music can reflect and influence social change, giving voice to ideas of resistance, dignity, and empowerment. 🎧 Analyse a Song with a Message Choose a song with a clear message, or start with an example like “Respect” by Aretha Franklin. What is it trying to say, and how do the lyrics, sound, or performance communicate that message? 💡 Think About It Why do certain songs become strongly linked to particular moments, movements, or groups of people? What makes music such a powerful way to communicate ideas? 🛠️ Skills You’re Building By exploring this, you’re developing: Critical thinking Cultural awareness Ability to analyse meaning and context 🚀 Keep Exploring Try this: Watch how music connects to architecture and society. 🎥 Hip Hop Architecture | Mike Ford (TEDx Talk) How does music reflect people’s experiences of the spaces they live in? What does this suggest about the relationship between culture and environment?

Why Do Instruments Sound Different? Part of our National Careers Week series exploring music across disciplines Music is something that can be designed. From the shape of an instrument to the layout of a concert hall, sound is constantly being shaped, controlled, and engineered. Today, let’s see how music connects to design, engineering, and architecture. 🧠 Big Question Why does the same note sound completely different on different instruments? 🎯 The Idea Sound begins with vibration, but what we hear depends on how that vibration is shaped. The materials used, the size and shape of an object, and even the space around it all affect how sound travels and is heard. That’s why the same sound can feel completely different depending on where and how it’s produced. This is where music connects to design, engineering, and acoustics, from building instruments to designing performance spaces and sound environments. 🔍 Try It Out 🎓 The Science of Making Musical Instruments (Open University) Explore how materials, shape, and design affect the way instruments produce sound. 🏢 Acoustics in Architecture (Modulyss Guide) Discover how buildings are designed to control sound, from classrooms to concert halls. 🎥 Concert Hall Acoustics Design (lecture) See how architects and engineers design spaces to control how sound is experienced — from clarity to how sound travels around a room. 💡 Think About It If you could design your own instrument, what would you change to create a unique sound? What factors would matter most, shape, material, or size? 🛠️ Skills You’re Building By exploring this, you’re developing: Design thinking Understanding of physical systems Ability to test and refine ideas 🚀 Keep Exploring Try this: Pay attention to how sound changes in different spaces — for example, a classroom, a corridor, or a large hall. Which spaces make sound feel clear and comfortable, and which feel noisy or overwhelming? How might the size, shape, or materials in the space be affecting that? What’s the difference between sound and noise, and how might that impact how people feel in those environments? #MusicCareersWeek

Is Music Just Maths You Can Hear? Part of our National Careers Week series exploring music across disciplines. You might not immediately connect maths and music. But if you enjoy spotting patterns, solving problems, or thinking logically, you might find there’s more overlap than you expect. Let’s explore how music connects to mathematics, patterns, and structure. 🧠 Big Question Could music just be maths in disguise? 🎯 The Idea Music is built on patterns. Rhythms follow timing and repetition, melodies are shaped by intervals between notes, and even harmony is based on mathematical ratios. For example, when you hear two notes that sound in tune, their frequencies are often related by simple ratios. Music connects to areas like mathematics, acoustics, and even data and algorithms, especially in composition and digital music. 🔍 Try It Out 🎧 Listen to 4′33″ by John Cage A piece of music made entirely of silence, what happens when music is reduced to zero sound, and does that still count as music? 🎥 Pythagoras’ Monochord: Music and Maths Explained See how ancient thinkers used a single string to explore the relationship between sound and numbers. 🧪 Create Your Own Sound Patterns (Chladni Plate Experiment) Explore how sound vibrations form visible patterns, showing how music connects directly to physics and maths. 💡 Think About It Why do some rhythms feel natural and easy to follow, while others feel unpredictable? What role do you think patterns play in that? 🛠️ Skills You’re Building By exploring this, you’re developing: Pattern recognition Logical and analytical thinking Ability to connect abstract ideas to real-world examples 🚀 Keep Exploring Try this: Watch how sound becomes visible in cymatics experiments. 🎥 Cymatics – Nigel Stanford What do you notice about the patterns created by different frequencies? How does this change the way you think about sound and music? ℹ️ About My My Super Curricular My Super Curricular supports students in exploring their interests beyond the classroom, helping them build ideas they can use in their personal statements, university applications, and future plans. It’s also used by schools and colleges to structure super curricular 👉 Find out more: mysupercurricular.co.uk #MusicCareersWeek
