@AaronBastani Media has been doorstepping him for days - ever since the latest story broke. There’s no pics or video because he hasn’t left his house.

Haven’t seen many/any videos of the broadcast media harassing Mandelson outside his house. Was constant during Corbyn leadership - and indeed for some time after. I’d say ‘curious’, but it’s because basically the whole of broadcast media (except GB News) swings New Labour.

When PM David Cameron appointed an official photographer on the public payroll he was excoriated by Ed Miliband — so much so that Cameron backed down and put the snapper on the Tory party payroll. Now the energy secretary, Miliband is appointing his own official photographer (following Angela Rayner’s example) at an annual cost of £50,000+ to the taxpayer. Someone to take pics that ‘grab headlines and stand out on social media’ (aka as promoting E Miliband). At least he’ll have someone close to hand to snap the blackouts his energy policies portend. Here’s an early example.

What's the deal with London's Harry Potter shops, which are in some of the capital's most prominent shopping areas? And why are so many of these businesses now owned by a 31-year-old woman in Oxford who originally claimed she was not the actual owner when we tracked her down?

Ironic this photo has been used - of the PM ignoring my raised hand while he files through the list of journalists his aides decided in advance should get to ask questions. Pic from the great @StefanRousseau

Feel like there’s a correlation between why a lot of art feels so stagnant and the fact that mainly rich kids are the only ones getting to be filmmakers, writers, singers, etc. It’s boring cause people who have nothing to say are doing the talking.

V. disappointing that the government didn't invite news photographers to the DPM's visit to Durham yesterday with biz sec Jonathan Reynolds but more surprising that newspapers who reported that Angela Rayner had hired a 'vanity photographer', have used his pictures today.

Some news: I've quit my job at the Guardian to launch London Centric, a modern news outlet for the capital doing journalism in the old-fashioned way. I saw the response on here to the Evening Standard's print closure and it felt like time to step up: londoncentric.media

Son of a Lord Chancellor, educated at Westminster School, St John's Cambridge and Yale. Following a stint at the Foreign Office he mooches into a think-tank, before election as an MP. I'm tremendously in favour of this. Chaps who know chaps who know chaps who know a chap's pater.

It’d be very ‘HM Treasury’ to deny Harland & Wolff a bailout based on narrow measures of cost-effectiveness…then wonder in 5 years why (a) it has nowhere to build/refit large ships, (b) Belfast’s welfare bill has soared, and (c) NI politics has swung towards populist extremists.

The state of streets across U.K. is extraordinarily bad. Far worse than it’s been in my lifetime. But we had very clean streets, with no weeds, before glyphosate was invented (really!) City maintenance (streets, signs) should be in house. Done with pride by people on good money.

So sad to hear about the passing of Ray Reardon. A titan of snooker. A marvellous man. And this story about his days in the mines is still one of the most astonishing I’ve ever heard…

This newspaper used to compete with the nationals for the big stories. This is not the fault of the staff…it’s the slash and burn tactics of media companies. Local news has never been more important but it’s going the way of the Dodo 😐

Some people mocking this but that's exactly how you start a career in Chinese politics, at the village or county level. Xi himself started as Party secretary of Liangjiahe, a small village in Shaanxi province. He then got promoted to county level, province level, etc. I find it healthy, certainly better than those Yale kids going straight to work as advisors to the White House or some federal agency without having spent a day of their lives actually understanding the people's conditions on the ground. And it's a great filter: if you're not even able to solve village-level practical issues, you definitely shouldn't be promoted to higher levels of government...

We investigate the scandal of London's disappearing police stations #frontpage Fifteeen years ago, the capital had 160, but that has been cut sharply to just 36. A new study argues the changes have had a worrying effect on violent crime. Find out why: standard.co.uk/lifestyle/lond…
