The *missing* cooler than average 'horseshoe' pattern around the warmer than average tropical Pacific is THE standout of the 2023 El Nino. Great comparison figure @NiwaWeather - worth clicking on this one.

The 2023 El Niño features warmer than average ocean water near the equator like past events, but also across most of the rest of the planet- much *unlike* past events! El Niño's impact on weather patterns in 2023 was therefore different from strong El Niño events in the past.
