People who disagree with @Carol cannot be doing so because they've formulated a different view of where they believe governance should be and decided it should be in a democracy where politicians vie for the attention of the voters by offering the voters what they, the politicians believe they want, are misguided fools. The cognoscenti know what's best for them and that is government by bureaucrats, where what they want isn't what they get, it's what their unelected betters believe they should get.
