As a dean, it is heartbreaking when foreign students ask if they are safe studying here. As an economist, I worry about the effects on our great country. My latest thehill.com/opinion/educat…

Diversification is hard. China controls a large share of global supply and US controls a large share of global demand. Other countries want to replace China in production--not so much in consumption, despite consumption being the ultimate goal.

I’m against tariffs—a trade war would be terrible—but exaggerating their dangers could backfire. The biggest risk from raising tariffs has (so far) been dodged. thehill.com/opinion/financ…

International students bring a diversity of views & experiences + education is a major US export. Yet student visa appointments are scarce in select countries. Even allies like Japan. Makes me worry that student visas are now chips in trade negotiations. jp.usembassy.gov/visas/

Controlling for transshipment and de minimis, we show that China is being replaced by . . China in US market. As direct imports from China fall, goods entering through transshipment and de minimis increase. Chapter 4 in The State of Globalisation | CEPR

The lack of knowledge here on de minims & transshipment is simply unbelievable. - Transhipment patterns take multiple months, years, to emerge. - @CarolineFreund is arguing that Chinese exporters, turned away in March, within a month had re-routed same goods, new packaging/on shore handling, via other nations. Doesn't work that way. - This is just awful work.

@Jefft41377774 @scottlincicome Adjusting 2023 data for de minimis and transshipment, this is the change in each country's import share between 2017 (before any exceptional tariffs on China) and 2023.

A great example of how University research saves lives. AI cameras developed and run out of UC San Diego spot wildfires before they spread. wsj.com/tech/ai/these-…

Using product-level data, I estimated the share of US imports from Mexico and Vietnam that are likely to be transshipped from China. Full report here: 02072025-brief-identify-tariff-evasion-web.pdf

#3 in public universities! Two @GPS profs cited: Jennifer Burney "studying why certain racial and ethnic groups in the US face higher exposure to urban heat." Joshua Graff Zivin "examining the effects of extreme heat on labor" today.ucsd.edu/story/uc-san-d…
