ESPN sources: The Broncos and Sean Payton have reached agreement on a new five-year contract.   Payton has led the Broncos to the third-most wins in the NFL over the past two years, including an AFC Championship Game appearance last season.   Now, Broncos owner Greg Penner has both his HC and GM George Paton under contract through the 2030 season, with stability across his football operations.

It's fascinating how different the Nuggets and Avs are run. Nuggets have stayed conservative and patient throughout the Jokic era. Not a lot of trades. Same core for the last several years. Even the end of the roster hasn't changed much. They've preached continuity. You have way more players and more potential moves to make in the NHL, it's also easier to make trades. But the Avs have made 17 trades in just the last two seasons, including some blockbusters -- for Kadri and the trade off Rantanan. They've completely remade their roster and depth. The two teams under the same ownership couldn't run more differently, and both have 1 championship (so far) in this era and about the same recent playoff success.

They don’t *need* to make this choice. There’s no basketball mechanism forcing it. They’re expected to make this choice so their owners can avoid a historic tax bill, and if they’re going to make their team worse to do that let’s appropriately shame them for it.

The Nuggets will need to choose between Peyton Watson and Cam Johnson this offseason due to apron limitations. With Christian Braun’s $125 million contract locked in, Denver won’t be able to keep both. Johnson being traded to re-sign Watson is viewed as the most plausible path.
