This brochure was found at the “Wish for a Baby” fertility fair in Berlin. It advertises a surrogacy program in Ghana. The package offered to clients includes: • “Unlimited Frozen Embryo Transfers” • Up to 10 embryos • The possibility of “changing surrogates”.. Meanwhile, the brochure explains that surrogate mothers live in agency housing under supervision… while the clients enjoy a 21-day tourism stay in Ghana. A reproductive assembly line. Women managed. Babies delivered. Clients on vacation. This is the reality of the global surrogacy industry.

Today my statement was broadcast at the UN Human Rights Council (HRC61) in Geneva during the Interactive Dialogue with the Special Rapporteur on the Sale of Children. I spoke both as spokesperson of the @CasaDeclaration and as a person born through surrogacy. Under the Optional Protocol, the sale of children is defined as: “any act or transaction whereby a child is transferred… for remuneration or any other consideration.” Surrogacy arrangements organise the pre-birth transfer of a child and involve consideration, even when labelled “altruistic”. Today in Berlin, on International Women’s Rights Day, we protested outside a surrogacy fair. I was born through surrogacy. I don’t know how much I was worth. But inside this fair, you can buy: 👉 a white baby from Ghana for around €45,000 👉 an American baby for up to €150,000 This is not “family building.” This is a global billion dollar baby market.
