The Cascadia Fault

The most dangerous fault line in North America

What’s Shaking Alaska?! Over the past week, we recorded about 300 seismic events. The largest earthquake was a magnitude 5.4 on October 30th, between Seward and Homer. Thousands of people, from up to 100 miles away, reported shaking that lasted between 10 and 40 seconds. The duration and intensity of shaking depends on a lot of factors (bit.ly/4hTtxIo), including distance to the epicenter, depth of the event, and the type of ground and building material of your property. Thankfully, no one reported any damage. Magnitude 5 and above earthquakes are not unusual for the Kenai Peninsula, which experiences an average of 10 such events each year. The closest Alaska Earthquake Center seismic stations to the October 30th quake are located at Bradley Lake Dam. These four stations were installed starting in 2008, in partnership with the Alaska Energy Authority. Having seismic stations at the dam to monitor shaking is a good safety precaution. Coincidentally, our field team had completed their annual inspection of the stations just days prior to the quake. Instrument upgrades helped ensure quality data were available to assess the strength and style of shaking, information that helps the dam engineers know immediately what emergency response may be needed. Check out firsthand accounts of the magnitude 5.4 in our web story, on our home page or here: bit.ly/4qLdlNg.

Scientists at Oregon State University say there's new evidence that two of the best-known earthquake fault lines on the West Coast are in sync and that has the potential for a major disaster. One of the fault lines is the San Andreas Fault. Story here: abc7news.com/17967234/

Can anyone point to me exactly where America started going downhill?
