Less drama, more progress. Less shouting, more listening. Less extremism, more intellectual tension. Less speculation, more introspection. Less debate, more conversation.

@intentionally "Switch on Your Brain" (Leaf) and "10% Happier" (Harris) were hugely helpful books for me on this topic.

So many of us spend our lives as slaves to our emotions (I’ve been guilty myself over the last 9 months or so.) But many of our emotions are actually downstream of our thoughts. Which means if you change your thoughts you can largely change your emotions. Hugely liberating.

@AmandaMGoetz Resist the temptation to change things right away. Pay attention, listen, gain context before you change things. You might gain an understanding and appreciation for the way things are/should be.

@jarridvtingle Probably more "in the moment" types - which are nice people to be around when you're with them. :) And, in some ways, have generally figured out an important part of life - despite some shortcomings.

I naturally gravitate towards people who are smart and nice, but are bad at staying in touch and just okay at follow-through. Trying to figure out what that means.

For the last few years I’ve been using basketball players to teach my son life lessons. He knows the players intimately. Aspires to be like them. It gives me great mental hooks to show him how one’s habits and character influence their success. 5 examples:

She’s not nearly as shameless as I am. But my wife is in every way my superior. Today she started as the new Chief Revenue Officer at a mid-sized investment bank and valuation firm. Killed it as a consultant, made a career pivot at 90 mph. Couldn’t be prouder of her.

If we've learned anything from COVID, it's that when the planet faces an alien invasion or natural disaster-type apocalypse, we absolutely will NOT put aside our differences and come together to save ourselves.

A question for you: what’s an important idea, mental model or concept that very few people (even those you consider smart/well educated) know about?

It's counterintuitive. But the best way to change someone's mind is to ask questions. Genuinely, with legit curiosity. - It shows respect for their intellect. - It shows humility. - It shows you want an actual relationship. - It forces them to clarify their thinking.

@thefivecoat Social Media, for sure. No utility that outweighs all the negative impact. Internet will be more like electricity. Can't live without it, but has generated new problems (emissions).
