@JayRuderman When I discovered at age 33 that I am Autistic. Subsequently learning how I had spent so much of my life masking my autistic traits to fit into neurotypical society allowed me to embrace my natural way of being, reimagine my life and find belonging in the Autistic community.

"I think the first advice that I give any activist is that if you have no hope, you have no movement. So you have to have hope…[and] say thank you to fellow activists for what they're doing, because 99% of what we do is for free." #autisticvoices

@kerblooee @marco_giancotti This “non-visual spatial imagery” and “flashes of insight” resonates with my experience. I believe I am an aphant and have SDAM (a revelation I had about 4 days ago). Can you describe those 2 concepts a bit more?

I have aphantasia, meaning that I can't form mental images at will. Nor, in my case, sounds, smells, flavors, tactile sensations, or emotions. When I close my eyes, I enter a blank world. In this thread I'll try to express what that is like for those who don't have aphantasia.

“I was already a huge advocate for my son Gabriel…everybody knows, I'm telling you what his needs are. And it's becoming an advocate for myself and to say, listen, I'm uncomfortable or I can't. It's allowed me to to speak up more.” autisticvoices.org/gonzales-lates…
