It's publishing week for my first book, 'Kierkegaard's Ontology.' If you'd be so kind, please ask your library to order a copy. If you'd be even kinder, consider buying or reviewing a copy: bloomsbury.com/us/kierkegaard…

Another notable essay on the Tower of Babel is Reinhold Niebuhr's in his collection Beyond Tragedy. And yes, in a past life I wrote a long-ish paper comparing Niebuhr and Oakeshott's treatments of the Babel myth ("Politics after Babel") if anyone wants to read it

Side note for KYE nerds: Michael Oakeshott wrote not one but two essay on the Tower of Babel, unsurprising given his emphasis on the perils of "rationalism" (one of the Babel essays is in the Rationalism and Politics collection, the other in the On History volume)
Pope Leo XIV@Pontifex

Humanity, created by God in all its grandeur, is today facing a pivotal choice: either to construct a new Tower of Babel or to build the city in which God and humanity dwell together. In Jesus Christ, this humanity in its grandeur becomes the Way, the Truth and the Life, opening the path for each of us to grow toward fullness. #MagnificaHumanitas vatican.va/content/leo-xi…

This is why you people should still read Heidegger, Schmitt, Jünger. It seems Eberhard Jüngel is the only theologian who's learned this semantic lesson that's much more than just a semantic lesson.

Alas, the unfortunate continuation of "supreme value" and "profound value" language, right where it's trying to speak of "ontological dignity." Any time one uses "value," one is assuming the ontology of the will-to-power. Most often, unknowingly.

@aaron_renn The two Ringer critics who attended the screening thought it was much more critical of Norway, according to how they described it on their podcast.

Last night I watched “Stewart Udall: The Politics of Beauty.” I’ve been thinking a lot about him lately. I keep hoping a Udall for our time might emerge.

Last week, in the span of two days, I saw Robert Earl Keen and Willie Nelson play live. It felt like an appropriate farewell to Texas.

If you're a retiring professor in Oxford, Ohio or someone with a house that looks like a professor would live in it, and you're looking to move, let me know. Tangentially, I didn't know how many mid-century modern houses there are in the rural midwest.

@CaseySpinks I use the Folger Library edition. It is expensive (I bought it with a book allowance given when I was ordained in the late 1990s) but a very fine edition.

@jamesrwoodtheo It was just what I was looking for: to my mind, the best contribution a Protestant postliberal would offer.

this was probably more than @CaseySpinks was looking for, but I was genuinely inspired by his series, and the last installment in particular

@cath_cov Your mind would change if you consider Andreas Rudelbach and the fact that he was one of few who remained friends with Kierkegaard to the end.
