Spellow Lane Library will of course re-open in a blaze of hope and glory.  Not so the other 900 and odd libraries we lost this last decade - not to fire but to “austerity”.

V personal thread with a public punch line A few days ago my sister was at the curfew tower in Cushendall.  She met a man from Liverpool.  They got talking and he realised he knew our Mum.  More importantly that HIS mum knew our mum …..

A thread about my wonderful friend Kay Benbow, gone shockingly soon. So successful, yet always Kay. Very sad.

@Howard_Goodall So glad to hear that he is still performing this gig. Alan Price is a hero of mine. I saw him several times in the old Yamaha Room at the Bulls Head - sometimes with Zoot Money. Amazing! When the gig moved the acoustics were a bit unforgiving, but no doubt that's all sorted now!

I've heard Rhapsody in Blue played more showily, but this recording with the composer at the piano, accompanied by the jazz band who premiered it #OTD 100 years ago sends shivers down my spine. 1 hour 40 minutes in to @PetrocTrelawny's show this morning. bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/m0…

An interesting thread about one of my favourite pieces, premiered 100 years ago today. Like all formative moments in life I remember the very first time I heard it - in a music lesson with Mr Herbert @WestleyMiddle when I was 12. Thanks Mr Herbert!

Feb. 12, 1924: George Gershwin’s “Rhapsody in Blue” is performed for the first time. The landmark blend of classical and jazz sounds is part of an “Experiment in Modern Music” concert. From the opening clarinet glissando, an audience in New York’s Aeolian Hall is enthralled. 1/6

If every one of the more than 1.2 MILLION people who have now watched this signed up to @_CFTA, we could build a movement. Campaign for the Arts already has people in every UK constituency. What we need now is an #ArtsArmy. Please add your voice here: campaignforthearts.org
