One of the many problems with the traditional percentage scale: A disproportionately large failure zone. The typical F range is SIX TIMES larger than the A, B, C, and D range. Why do we need 60 different ways to describe failure? #edchat

Despite the rain, we had a great turnout for day 1 of the @CFA_United strike! I would rather be prepping for the semester but I appreciated picketing with my my physics, biology, chemistry, math, computer science, engineering, and english faculty colleagues out there today!

The @calstate is the path to the California dream for millions of students across our state. This is only possible thanks to our hard working faculty and staff. I stand with @CFA_United and @IBTlocal2010 in their fight for fair pay, workload, and benefits.

CA has the biggest & best public university system in the nation because of our faculty. They deserve fair contracts with better salaries & benefits that honor their outstanding work. I'm proud to stand with members of @CFA_United & @IBTlocal2010 on strike! #CFAFacultyRising

The largest public university system in the U.S., @calstate is strong and successful because of their hardworking faculty and staff. I stand with @CFA_United and @IBTlocal2010 and urge CSU to bargain in good faith to deliver higher base salaries and better conditions. #CFAProud

Fellow parents - do you have a good bedtime routine with your kids? If yes - is it because you have one kid and they are 32 and don’t even live in your house anymore? 🫠

In case it helps, this is my latest piece for The Washington Post, "The Answer Sheet" (via @valeriestrauss) -- It's on why we'd turn zeroes on the 100-point scale into 50's and the need to re-think our grading practices. It's meant for both educator and general public use. washingtonpost.com/education/2023…

@rickwormeli2 @eduleadership @valeriestrauss In addition to political will- there is also the fact that students understand the 100 point scale. Using the 4.0 scale (for example) confuses the students. They see a score of 2.0 and think they are failing with 50% when they have a C grade. I agree with turning zeros into 50%

Hey Justin - That may be in the cards sooner rather than later, yes, but for now, if we are grading and using a 100-point scale, then let's at least even the intervals for the grade ranges and move from mean to mode. I know Doug's article well, and yes, we could move to a different scale -- but there's that political will to do so challenge...
