@CasserolePinoy

I primarily use twitter for news. I won't tweet much, but I'll try to keep it to valuable info and ideas. Sometimes I'll argue in the comments.

@romanhelmetguy I just wonder why we're all still calling her work a "translation" and not what it really is, a reinterpretation. One with a clear agenda and bias.

I’ve successfully shifted the discourse about Emily Wilson’s translation on here by academics from “It’s great” to “Ok so she takes a ton of liberties and makes many questionable choices and I don’t personally like it, but translation is hard, and I really hate RHG.” Progress.

@TPAction That was proposed by a single senator; it's not accurate to say it was introduced by Democrats.

@ninja_maths Can you clarify the distinction in practice? Do you mean the student ought to understand the why of each step?

Worked examples are not “hand-holding.” They are often the fastest way to learn new mathematics well. The point is *not* to memorize steps. The point is to internalize the logic of the mathematical argument. Those are two very different things.

@anOrdoLiberal @ninja_maths You can just ignore the recommendation and stay in the course. It'll fill in the prereqs you need while also teaching whatever material you're ready for.

I'm happy to announce that we've just released a major update to our Mathematics for Machine Learning course! Here’s a summary of what's new.👇

It's an ensemble course, so a selection of topics from Linear Algebra, Multivariable Calculus, Differential Equations, and Probability and Statistics. Separation of Variables for first-Order ODEs is covered in Calc I, a prerequisite course. It's a prerequisite for a number of topics in these courses, so students will definitely need to know it to make progress. I can look to include it in this course, too, if that feels confusing; thanks for the heads up. The courses are based around topics (and their prerequisites) that naturally occur in the physical sciences. For example, Homogeneous First-Order ODEs and Riccati Differential Equations might be interesting mathematically, but they're not too important in physics and other physical sciences, so they were left out.

I'm delighted to announce that @_MathAcademy_ has released two courses in Mathematical Methods for the Physical Sciences. Designed for students who want the mathematical tools needed for undergraduate-level study in physics, engineering, and other STEM fields. Details below👇

@Megalithic12000 @MichaelButtonX Can you actually cite what exactly Dr. Finkel says? Because its a recurring pattern for alt history dudes (especially Hancock) to distort and misrepresent what academics say to fit their consoiracy narrative

My 7th grader needs to read a book and write a paper for women's history month. It can be fiction or non-fiction but must be written by a woman and represent a "woman's voice". Any ideas for a book about women that my son would enjoy?

"0.999..." is bad notation. It's deliberately made to look like a decimal number, when in fact the "..." expresses the limit of a series. It should simply be noted as the limit of a series, in which case no one would question it's equal to 1. The nature of the trick is, "can you see through my misleading notation?" -- not particularly profound IMO

@alz_zyd_ @deux_ex_max Communication among professional mathematicians would be seriously hindered if they couldn't communicate in this highly compact form, which requires years of training, the earlier the better.

@alz_zyd_ @deux_ex_max Also, the ability to construct mental models yourself without guidance is an important training for research mathematicians, so talented students reading these books get a high volume of practice from early on.

Math textbooks are written in a pointlessly obtuse way. Gemini does an incomparably better job. My professional opinion is that all undergrads learning real analysis should give up reading baby Rudin, and simply learn analysis from Gemini instead

@alz_zyd_ I found baby rudin easy to read, like a novel. I would've much preferred it to this Gemini version.
