I am following with deep concern what is happening in the Middle East and in Iran during this tumultuous time. Stability and peace are not achieved through mutual threats, nor through the use of weapons, which sow destruction, suffering, and death, but only through reasonable, sincere, and responsible dialogue.

I lost friends in Iraq. War is not a slogan — it is a burden carried by young Americans and the families who love them. We must never forget that cost. We can support freedom abroad without sending another generation into a forever war.

It wasn’t long ago that thousands of American families lost sons and daughters for a war with no end in sight. Trump is risking that again with Iran, and he’s doing it all without Congressional approval. The Senate needs to come back to Washington to do its job.

People who’ve never served are often the quickest to start dropping bombs without a plan for what’s next. The American people have seen this play out before and they’re tired of it. Trump is sending our servicemembers into harm’s way without a clear explanation or an end goal.
