As Igbo people, it’s important we know and use the names that belong to us. Language is identity, and the moment we start replacing our words, we slowly lose pieces of who we are. It’s called Akwa-otu, not asoebi. It’s called Agwa, not ewa. It’s called Udara, not agbalumo. It’s called Ichafu, not gele. It’s called Ogiri, not iru. It’s called Utara, not eba. It’s called Ofe Nsala, not white soup. It’s called Ofe akwu, not banga stew. The list goes on. We don’t have to abandon our language to be understood. Say it in Igbo, and if needed, explain it. That’s how culture is preserved. That’s how identity survives.

The DSS has allegedly tortured and killed Sheikh Khalifa Sani Zaria, a Darika scholar in Zaria, Kaduna State. He was reportedly arrested months ago because of his association with an army officer whose name is linked to those who allegedly attempted a coup against Tinubu’s government. Does associating with Tinubu make Sheikh Yahaya Jingir a drug baron? No. The DSS must either release him or tell us the truth about his death.
