Water restrictions start Monday, March 9 CALGARY - With one week to go until the start of water restrictions, The City of Calgary is asking Calgarians to get ready and help spread the word. On Monday, March 9, the Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) will be shut down to allow for planned reinforcement repairs to support the stability of the current pipe. With the BSFM out of service, no outdoor water use will be permitted, and indoor water conservation will be needed to make sure that there is enough water to meet urgent needs. Due to the poor condition of the BSFM and its importance in Calgary’s drinking water system, The City is reinforcing sections of pipe that are experiencing enhanced levels of deterioration. These reinforcements are intended to support continued operation of the BSFM until the new parallel steel pipe is completed in December. Construction on the planned reinforcements will start March 9, 2026, and is expected to last approximately four weeks. We need your help to save water While the feeder main is out of service, The City will be supplying most of its water to Calgary and neighbours in Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore and Tsuut’ina Nation from only one treatment plant. This means that we cannot get as much water as normal from our plants to your taps. We need to keep our water use below 500 million litres per day to stay out of the risky red zone. If we use more water than our plant can supply, our water system will be at increased risk. This could mean •That the water system can’t provide adequate water to fight fires. •Low water pressure in the system can lead to a city-wide boil water advisory. •If there is a major plant or water system failure, there could be no water available. The good news is, if we work together, meeting this target is in our reach. We’re asking everyone to set a goal of saving at least 25 litres of water per day. •Every minute counts - Keep showers to three minutes or less. •Every flush counts - Flush toilets only when needed. •Every load counts - Only run dishwashers and washing machines when there is a full load. •Find and fix leaks in your home. •No outdoor watering is allowed during this time. Help spread the word This week you’ll start to see signs, ads and receive postcards in your mailbox to raise awareness about the water restrictions. At a time when people get their information from so many different sources, we need to get the word out in as many places as possible. You can help here too. Talk to your neighbours, help spread the word to your social networks and stay connected to our updates on the web, in the news and on social media to get the latest information. The City of Calgary is getting ready The City is taking steps to reduce water use during the reinforcement work. We will only wash City vehicles when needed for health and safety, we are finding and fixing leaks and planning other water saving measures at our recreation facilities, avoiding outdoor water use except when needed for health and safety, and we are asking employees to be mindful of their water use, including work from home if their jobs allow, to reduce the need for flushes during the work day. Teams have been busy reaching out directly to businesses and organizations to encourage them to reduce water use. We are also working directly with the municipalities of Airdrie, Chestermere, Strathmore and Tsuut’ina Nation, who share our water supply. Construction preparation underway This week crews will begin mobilizing to the areas where planned reinforcements will take place. We will begin removing sections of the concrete medians that divide westbound and eastbound 16 Avenue to prepare for traffic detours. The westbound exit from 16th Avenue N.W. onto Sarcee Trail will remain closed. You will see construction site trailers setting up in the area. More information on construction and impacts will continue to be shared as we advance towards this critical work. Together we can The actions you take make a big difference. When we all do our part, together we will save millions of litres of water each day. That helps our treatment and distribution system keep up and continue providing the water you count on. Please do your part. Every drop counts. To stay updated on how we are doing and to find out more ways to save water, visit calgary.ca/savewater.

With Enbridge rationing space on its Mainline pipeline system to USA and Transmountain at >90% capacity to access the Asian market, things are getting tight. As @rory_johnston excellent chart shows, Canada needs some new oil pipelines!

I should have said this before, but please do share this. I want the entire world to see how much I love my wife, and want her to know everyone knows. So please. Retweet. Share.
Matt Gurney@mattgurney

Hey guys. This is going to be the most personal update I’ve ever shared publicly. I live in public view — my work does, anyway. I’ve never been shy about sharing my ideas or passions. But I’ve always worked very hard to keep my family out of view. That’s partly for their safety. But also because, despite appearances, I am an intensely private person. The public part of my job is exhausting and often a little frightening. I’m now facing something far more frightening. And I may need your help. Last fall, my wife became very ill. A series of medical tests ruled out the non-scary explanations. Just before Christmas, we were told it was metastatic cancer. She has since undergone urgent surgeries, including successful removal of the primary tumour. She is young, strong, and otherwise healthy, and her recovery so far has been remarkable. Now we are entering a long, grinding phase of this fight — chemotherapy and we hope other treatments — with the goal of getting ahead of this nightmare. We have cause for optimism. The metastasis is real and terrifying, but limited and small. We didn’t catch this “early,” but we may have caught it early by the standards of such things. We have a real shot, and we are determined to fight as hard as we possibly can. Many of you noticed I went completely to ground. This is why. If you are the praying type, we would appreciate your prayers. For those who may be able to offer medical help and options, please reach out — I’m easy to find. I’m assembling an army for her. This is the most important thing I’ve ever done, and I can’t imagine a better use of my energy or my skills. As we settle into a new rhythm, I’m beginning a gradual return to work. Don’t be surprised if you see more thoughts from me about the health-care system. I’ve been amazed and humbled by some of the care we’ve received. I’ve also been shocked and frightened by other parts of the experience. I’ll have more to say about that later. But now I want to talk about my wife. We met when we were 17. We had math class together. I changed my seat so I could look at her. She was stunning. I can still see her in my mind’s eye exactly as she was then. To me, she is as beautiful today as she was at 17. I did, and still do, feel like I’ve been winded when I just look at her. We weren’t high-school sweethearts. Our journey was longer. We didn’t become an official couple until late in university, after a long period of circling each other — trying to understand what to do with a deep friendship that was evolving into something much scarier and more consequential. We made the jump. Not without false starts. Not without fear. But we made it. And my life has been amazing since. Because of her. She is all I have ever wanted. She isn’t perfect. She isn’t easy. Neither am I. We’ve had good times and bad. But she is the absolute foundation of my world. My entire sense of self is wrapped up in her. I don’t know where I end and she begins. Nearly 20 years after we stood in a park and agreed to be together, I am as hopelessly in love with her as I was then. It is a crippling love — more than I contain. I can barely think about it. It just feels like too much when I try. She and our two children are my everything. And I am going to fight for her and for this family with absolutely everything I have. I will never surrender. I can’t. There is no me without her. So that’s the story. Please be patient with me. Please be kind. Pray for us if you can. And help us if you have the power.

Calgary - we're in the middle of a City-wide emergency. Any amount of water conservation helps. Follow @JeromyYYC for daily updates. Do your part and we'll get through this and ensure it never happens again.

Update #18 6am Jan 5 Overnight, our water use slipped further into the redzone. Without changes, we'll enter loss-of-life territory, where firefighting and emergency response may be compromised. This is serious. Reducing use now protects lives and keeps essential services running. Please conserve.

Despite the continued growth of oil demand, leaders, think tanks and institutions continue to write oil’s obituary. That kind of eulogizing has a century-long history of hubris. What’s in store for oil’s future? In this @TheHubCanada article, I look to coal’s past for insights.
