The fact that you can't even make out on a bench in Central Park without someone recording you on their iPhone and then posting it to social media as some kind of bit is everything that's wrong with society and I am not joking. The surveillance state (administered by an actual state or by the millions of people with phones who want to embarrass people on their TL) is essentially the least romantic thing imaginable in both the love sense and the living sense. It is anti-romantic and anti-life. Part of the reason why the before world was fun was the fact that you didn't have this kind of thing. The ability to do something without it being documented and recorded is the difference between being free vs an animal locked in a cage. There is a direct correlation between everyone constantly being afraid that someone is going to record them and post it somewhere and society becoming more neurotic, less fun, more boring, and less alive. The self-administered surveillance state is the enemy of life.

A reminder that it is the literal job of @PierrePoilievre to oppose the Government. To critique it. To question it. To compel it to answer questions. To find unexplored angles on issues that the Government must speak to. That is not an overly partisan act, that is our model of Government. You may dislike the way he carries out this duty, which he was elected by millions of Canadians to do, but you’re wrong to expect he should be celebrating any kind of soft-hearted or small wins of this Government of any kind. That is the partisan in YOU talking. That is not the role of the Official Opposition.

@bigheadhcky Fair enough Big Head! Though we’ll see if he has 2 Norris and a Cup in his first 8 seasons too. Tougher road ahead with his team.

@MichaelSolberg at the same age that schaefer is now, heading into year #2 of his career, cale makar was preparing to play his first career NCAA game. That season, he had a worse pt/game than Schaefer did last year (while Schaefer was a + defender).

Matthew Schaefer ranked last season among defensemen: • 2nd in goals • 3rd in WAR • 4th in shot attempts • 9th in takeaways • 11th in toi/game • 19th in pts/game He is the most generational defenseman prospect since Bobby Orr. Full stop.

@randyhillier @PierrePoilievre A fair point, Randy. I don’t mean to take away from the importance of many other qualities a PM-in-waiting must have, I am just tired of the pearl clutching when Pierre and the CPC follow through on exactly the role they’ve been elected to play in our parliamentary democracy.

@MichaelSolberg @PierrePoilievre That is inarguably if you see politicians as a 1 dimensional figure. Most people want to believe there is also a normal human being under the political veneer Michael. Your Dad demonstrated those qualities.

Finally retired my 15-year-old Craftsman lawn mower. It served well with a lot of hard use. I went electric and have to admit, I quite like it. Things change.

@MichaelSolberg In principle, I don’t disagree. What I’m looking for is opposition with the demeanour of a respectful leader in waiting. Many good messages in many cases, today and before, have been lost with the wrong delivery style.

Yeah, this is a very timely and important reminder. You can disagree with how he does it, but opposition in our form of government is an act of loyalty - and indeed an act of patriotism.

Patriotism is a "monopoly of the left" ??? You crack me up, Rupa. Wasn't it Trudeau who called Canada a "post-national state" with "no core identity" ??
Rupa Subramanya@rupasubramanya

"In virtually every other democratic country, patriotism is the province of the right. Only in Canada has it been the monopoly of the left." Fine column by @acoyne . How sad and pathetic is that the reaction from some Conservative politicians has been to shoot the messenger, rather than confront parts of the conservative movement that are carrying water for Trump or on board with separatism, both of which are politically toxic. What does it say about them, and by extension, their leader, Pierre Poilievre, that they'd rather pile on Coyne and this column rather than distance themselves from a part of the conservative movement that will ensure they remain in opposition for the foreseeable future. Stupid as it gets.

On the South Dakota prairie, a moose unexpectedly came across a herd of cows. I love the moment when he sits down and the curious cows gather around him in a half-circle, as if they’re trying to figure out who he is. 😅💗

We are supposedly at war to stop Iran from enriching the uranium we “obliterated” over a year ago. Yesterday we signed a deal to help Saudi Arabia enrich uranium. The first time the United States has ever helped another country enrich uranium on foreign soil. The Saudis refused the inspection protocol 140 other countries accept. Too intrusive, they said. Trump agreed. He signed a national security waiver to get around the rule. The Saudis paid Kushner $100 million. They put $2 billion into his firm. They put another $6 billion into LIV Golf, which pays Trump properties to host its tournaments. They signed ten billion dollars in Trump-branded real estate deals in Jeddah and Riyadh. All in just the last few years. But sure. My paintings.

COUNCIL FAILS TO LISTEN. AGAIN! Last night, Council voted on what happens to the 247 properties exempted from the repeal of blanket rezoning. Some had already been approved. Many had only submitted an application before the April 8 deadline — with no review, public input, or approval. At the public hearings, well over 90% of speakers asked Council to reverse these exemptions. Many residents were surprised to learn that even after the repeal, higher-density developments could still be approved next to their homes because these properties were allowed to keep their previous zoning. I voted NO to allow these exemptions. The motion passed 10-5. When Calgarians voted for repeal, they expected repeal to mean REPEAL. Applicants who rushed to submit before the deadline made a business decision and understood the risks. Submitting paperwork should not guarantee permanent zoning rights. Every application should be reviewed on its merits and with respect for the surrounding community. #yyc #yyccc #yycpoli #calgary

@jengerson Jen Gerson's fawning characterization of Jason Kenney and his 'conservatism' has thoroughly destroyed whatever limited claim to credibility she may have possessed.

This is very irresponsible. Politicians should not be implying other politicians are fascists. It is a form of dehumanization that implies that their opponents are evil and that their lives are therefore disposable. And I can almost guarantee they couldn't define the word or explain how the person they accuse is supposed to be one. We are in the dumbest and darkest timeline.
