Today the CPCA released the breakdown of retail vs exports, showing retail sales in China were down, while exports surged to the second-highest level ever for Giga Shanghai. Both statements are true at the same time: • Tesla China wholesale sales increased 36% • Tesla retail sales in China dropped 10% But, it is also important to understand how Giga Shanghai operates. Tesla has followed the same production and export cycle for years. The first half of each quarter typically sees exports surge. Domestic deliveries in China then ramp up later in the quarter as production shifts back toward local customers. This pattern has been observed consistently for years. Anyone regularly covering Tesla should already be familiar with this pattern, and how Tesla’s quarterly production cycles impact the monthly numbers.
