@AriWasserman the fact that you're just talking about Alabama is telling. Texas is also ranked above FSU. And if the rankings are to be believed - if Georgia had beaten alabama - then TExas would have been the 4 not FSU.

Our perception is Alabama is better. I think Alabama is better. But it isn't a fact. That's why we keep records. If I could pick which teams were better and that equated to wins 100 percent of the time, I'd be living in Malibu right now smoking a cigar in my infinity pool looking at the Pacific Ocean.
Clutch Is Everything@clutch_87

@AriWasserman The issue is that sports are designed for the best team or player to win. Yes, the CFB 4 team playoff system is flawed, but they chose the better team. You can't be mad that the best team might win the national title, and want the team who deserves it, to be in instead.

@AriWasserman the committee's criteria EXPLICITLY says they are supposed to prefer conference champions when ranking comparable teams.

This is for everyone to read because I think it is important. I understand what Dan is saying. But if the objective was always to just pick the 4 best teams -- regardless of results -- then the committee has been wrong every single year. Hell, they didn't even keep that in mind this year. You can't just pick "four best" and ignore Georgia's existence. If you're going to disregard a team that didn't lose, then why isn't Georgia in, too?
Dan Wolken@DanWolken

@AriWasserman Nobody who created this playoff ever once said that an undefeated team was supposed to have priority over a one-loss team. The committee was supposed to dig deeper than that.

In the end, FSU is either left out and it’s 4 best but you put UGA in… Or, FSU is left in and it’s 4 most deserving and you move Texas in The committee did neither of those things and that is entirely indefensible

@DawgStats I disagree, and my opinion is based on data. the playoff committee ranked texas higher than FSU, and the outcome of Alabama Georgia has no bearing on that decision. The counter opinion is based on a non-verifiable conspiracy theory, I cannot meaningfully interrogate

@ChadwickD This is stupid point you’re making. If Georgia wins. They put Texas at 5 and it’s the 4 13-0 Champs.

No. My point is that Alabama is the only team they’d put at 4 from 8. If UGA (12-1 with home loss to TX) #8 and beat #1 Alabama they don’t get in. If #8 LSU (12-1 with home loss to TX) beats #1 UGA they don’t get in. ALL THINGS EQUAL. Bama is THE ONLY team that gets in.

@AriWasserman if you look at the process the committee is given to follow, they are supposed to consider how key injuries affect the competitiveness of the teams. you're essentially asking the committee to ignore the criteria that was agreed upon by the conferences.

I think Alabama is going to win the national title. But I don't think they should have been in the CFP this year. Can't both be true? The best team doesn't always get to win it all. Winning it all is more than just being the best. It's also about being steadfastly excellent and doing everything in your power to hoist the final prize. Maybe I sound dumb? But the best team doesn't always win it all in sports.
Dan Wolken@DanWolken

@AriWasserman I listened to your pod yesterday and all three of you said straight up that Alabama is a better team than FSU as currently constructed but in the next breath said the committee was wrong for coming to the exact same conclusion.

@AaronSuttles If there is one available spot, and one 12-1 Power 5 champion beat the other 12-1 Power 5 champion, it should get in. That’s why people aren’t worked up about that. The committee said FSU was different w/o Travis, so it makes sense CFP could seed UT above FSU. But keep FSU in.

A quick way to identify people telling on themselves. It’s OK to be upset that FSU didn’t get into CFP. But pay attention to people, especially media, who focus their ire on Alabama/SEC but are silent on Texas. They’re OK with one 1-loss P5 champion passing FSU, just not Ala.

One thought re: FSU and penalizing a team for a key injury: It incentivizes teams to lie about injuries and/or rush players back from injuries before they’re ready. That is so wrong.

If we want to go best teams then FSU and Washington should be out 1. Michigan 2. Texas 3. Alabama 4. UGA If Washington is in, so should FSU. You can’t say Washington would be favored over Texas/Bama/UGA YOU HAVE TO STAY CONSISTENT

@alex_kirshner I mean it's a fair question imo: are they picking to reward the most accomplished season or to predict who will be most competitive in the three games? if it's the latter, there's a pretty strong argument for any of GA, AL, OSU, or OR over FSU

@TylerHuck The best sport with the worst postseason. I’ve said for a long time. Sorry, Huck. FSU got fucked by Bama entitlement. It’s not SEC entitlement. Because Bama is the ONLY team that gets this treatment.

My thoughts from Championship Weekend, from "The CFP committee picked the worst Alabama team in 15 years over an unbeaten P5 champion, and the sport will forever be worse off for it" to "Miami (Ohio) sure is good at special teams!" Quite the gamut here. espn.com/college-footba…

@alex_kirshner the committee followed the criteria that was agreed upon by the conferences. they rewarded conference championships and used strength of schedule, record against common opponents, head to head, and took into account injuries to key players. it's spelled out in their guidance.
