Today in history | From our 2026 Racial Justice Calendar On this day in 1977, a Commission of Inquiry began investigating the Soweto Uprising of June 1976. Its findings pointed beyond the events of a single day. The Commission acknowledged that discrimination, inequality, exclusion, and the frustrations of young people denied dignity and opportunity had helped fuel the unrest. The Commission's findings served as a reminder that when legitimate grievances are ignored, frustration can grow into resistance. They also challenged attempts to reduce the uprising to the actions of a few individuals, pointing instead to the deeper injustices that shaped everyday life under apartheid. That lesson remains relevant today. Real change begins when societies confront the root causes of their challenges rather than searching for simple explanations. في المداخلة المقدمة أمام الندوة المنظمة أمس الثلاثاء 16 يونيو 2026، على هامش الدورة ال62 لمجلس حقوق الإنسان الأممي، من طرف "مجموعة جنيف لدعم الصحراء الغربية"،تحت عنوان "الصحراء الغربية والحق في تقرير المصير: تحديات الشرعية الدولية"، تم التأكيد على النقاط التالية: 1. النزوع الحالي في تجاوز القانون الدولي والدبلوماسية المتعددة الأطراف، والذي يسعى لتكريس الأمر الاستعماري الواقع في #الصحراء_الغربية 🇪🇭 من خلال تقويض حق الشعب الصحراوي في تقرير المصير، لن تقف تبعاته الخطيرة عند حدود الاقليم، بل ستتعداها إلى المستوىين الدولي والإقليمي، خاصة ما يتعلق منه بمستقبل ال17 اقليما غير المستقلة والتي تنتظر استكمال عملية تصفية الاستعمار. 2. تصفية الاستعمار من #الصحراء_الغربية من خلال تمكين #الشعب_الصحراوي من حقه في تقرير المصير تبقى هي الضمانة الأكبر لأمن واستقرار شمال افريقيا. فالمغرب، وهو البلد الوحيد في العالم الذي لا يمتلك حدودا نهائية ومرسمة مع اي من جيرانه، ينتظر تقويض حق الشعب الصحراوي في تقرير المصير للشروع في مغامرات توسعية جديدة بناء على السرديات التي يؤسس لها النظام ويغذيها بشكل مستمر. بطريقة أو بأخرى، تضحيات ونضال الشعب الصحراوي خلال 50 سنة الماضية، شكل حائط الصد المنيع لإيقاف التوسع المغربي. 3. بمعزل عن "الألعاب النارية" التي أطلقها #المغرب 🇲🇦 عشية مصادقة مجلس الأمن 31 اكتوبر 2025 على القرار 2797، فهذا الأخير كان واضحا من خلال التأكيد على: -مركزية الحق في تقرير المصير باعتباره الهدف النهائي للعملية، - ميثاق #الأمم_المتحدة 🇺🇳 باعتباره إطار المسار المطلوب، - تحديد وتسمية طرفي النزاع #جبهة_البوليساريو 🇪🇭 و #المغرب 🇲🇦، باعتبارهما طرفي النزاع المعنيين بالتفاوض، - الحل يجب ان يكون مقبولا من الطرفين، و - بعثة المينورسو باعتبارها طرفا ضروريا في تسيير وضمان نجاح العملية السياسية. 4. في هذا الاطار الواضح، جرت وتجري الجهود الحالية والتي حققت، إلى حد الساعة، مكسبين جوهريين هما؛ - جلوس طرفي النزاع وجها لوجه في حوار مباشر لأول مرة منذ مدة طويلة، - حصول الطرفين على الوقت الكافي لتفصيل وشرح مقترحيهما لبعضهما البعض وللوسيطين الأممي 🇺🇳 والأمريكي 🇺🇸. في انتظار الاختراق المطلوب، يبقى القانون الدولي والحق في تقرير المصير هما الإطار الطبيعي، غير القابل للتجاوز للتوصل إلى حل سلمي وعادل ونهائي. 5. ثمة بعض الدوائر ووسائل الإعلام الدولية المرتبطة بالمغرب والتي تحاول تقديمه الآن كما لو كان الطرف المرن والمتعاون مع الجهود الدولية. مغالطة وتجني كبير على الحقيقة، إذ أنّ تنازلات ومساهمات البوليساريو الإيجابية طيلة ال36 سنة الماضية هي، وهي وحدها، ما حال، طيلة العقود الثلاثة الأخيرة، دون انهيار المسار ومغادرة #الأمم_المتحدة 🇺🇳 للاقليم. تنازلات بدأت من فتح معايير تحديد هوية المصوتين، وانتهت بقبول الجبهة "مخطط بيكر" 2003، بكل ما يعني من تنازلات مؤلمة. 6. #البوليساريو مستعدة للتعاون وكانت وما تزال كريمة، لكن فقط في حدود ما تمتلك. الحق في تقرير المصير وتحديد الوضع النهائي للاقليم ملك حصري للشعب الصحراوي، ولا يحق لها ولا لأي كان، التصرف فيه. والمقترح المغربي يصادر ذلك الحق ويحدد الوضع النهائي بمعزل عن رأي الشعب الصحراوي. 7. بالإضافة إلى تناقض المقترح المغربي مع القانون الدولي، فهو أيضا لا يشكل حلا وسطا، بل تجسيدا لصيغة "رابح في مقابل خاسر". المغرب يأخذ السيادة على الاقليم دون رأي شعبها وهذا هو الجوهر. فيما عدا ذلك، تبقى أمور اجرائية فقط. 8. المقترح المغربي يسعى إلى مصادرة العنصر الأهم وهو الحق في تقرير المصير ضمن سياق ابرز سماته هي الانتهاكات البشعة والممنهجة لحقوق الانسان وإغلاق الاقليم وطرد المراقبين من الاقليم بشكل مستمر. في الحقيقة، فإن من يدعمون المقترح المغربي إنما يدفعون بالصحراويين إلى "فم الأسد"، وفي أحسن الاحوال يدعونهم للالتحاق بالسجن المفتوح الذي يسمى المدن المحتلة من #الصحراء_الغربية.

As part of the #YouthLivesMatter campaign, the Rietfontein Youth Club hosted “50 Years Up”, an activation commemorating the youth of 1976 through sport, culture and community. Young people came together through dance, indigenous games, netball and soccer, using creativity, play and connection to celebrate the courage and resilience of the 1976 generation. The activation highlights that youth participation has always taken many forms. From the streets of 1976 to today’s communities, young people continue to build connections, inspire change and shape the future. The resolution called for diplomatic isolation, economic boycotts, and restrictions on trade and transport as peaceful means of pressuring the apartheid government to end its system of racial oppression. It marked one of the earliest coordinated efforts by African nations to use international solidarity and collective action in defence of human rights and freedom. Today, as debates continue around the crisis in Palestine, we point to this history as an example of how non-violent measures such as sanctions and boycotts have been used to pursue accountability and justice.
