@MJGold Michael - loved watching you run in Atlanta ‘96 🇺🇸 .. I have seen your interest only extends to Running events .. no interest and attention to Field events or that comes later ? ? Real fans love both T AND FIELD 😉

@MJGold Seems to me you never developed an understanding of full range of Track and Field-Athletics. Possibly Baylor did not embrace a full team culture? Why not take a positive tack and advocate for all events .. You have a podium to do this - why not. Reach out from your bubble.

I think there’s a reluctance by many in the sport to acknowledge that field events are a problem. See question and answers below. The problems: 1) Average person can’t easily appreciate the great athleticism and skill of field events. 2) They take too long, with too many pauses in the action. 3) The rules are complicated and difficult to quickly understand 4) Difficult to compare competitors efforts against one another (competition). Result: In a sport where multiple events take place simultaneously, field events will always take a back seat to track races, and the great field event athletes will too. It’s easy to just blame “the powers that be” for not simply promoting or showing them more. But the reality is these events have an inherent disadvantage and unless they’re changed this will continue.

Why is it Ryan Crouser (2x OLY & 1x WCH champ, WR holder, dominator!) doesn’t get the same attention and appreciation for his accomplishments as these other stars, Mondo, Sydney, Fred, or Noah?

@treyhardee Going back many years :Coleman, Pickering, Storey, Dickenson, Hutchings spoke of rules, strategy, technique .. viewers became invested-the fan base grew and Personality Stars household names. Check BBC archives ,need more like Trey.. more can be done, more action, information.

With MUCH respect Michael: 1) Go to a track meet with literally anyone and watch their head explode during PV 2) This is called “a story”, and it develops over the entirety of the comp, creating drama that lasts longer than a 10 or 20 second race. It’s NEVER a let down. 3) Rules? Jump higher/farther or throw farther… you win. Same as “point A to point B”. Not complicated. 4) I don’t understand what you’re saying the difficulty is. It’s a competition… there are winners & losers at the end. My thought: FIELD events are the ONLY part of T&F that could breakaway, stand alone, and be successful. (eg: street vaults). They allow for a singular 60-90min focus and a drama unfolds (unpredictably I might add) right in front of spectators who can witness someone doing a feat over and over and over (instead of ONE race) and become invested. I’ve seen it, I’ve experienced it. The loudest Eugene was last summer?? Mondo and Crouser (Kara Winger honorable mention). I try my damnedest to present that excitement, wonder, and joy when I’m on air calling events… because it’s genuinely how I feel & what the stadium sounds like too. Field events aren’t the problem. The sport, as it always has been, is ATHLETE driven. It needs personalities more than it needs WR’s. It needs those personalities to go head to head and not be driven by contract reduction fear (or other misaligned incentives). It needs athletes to compete and stop ducking. It has messy and complicated governance. I appreciate your tweets/thoughts, but don’t agree with you here (also responded that Crouser’s airtime on NBC is second to none).

@treyhardee Trey you’re totally on the right side of this debate. .. and who better to understand, appreciate and educate TV viewers. Hoping you get more mic time imparting knowledge, perspective and enthusiasm. Sadly Michael has learned little from his predecessors at the BBC ..

Super proud of @HollyBradshawPV tonight - first time in the commentary box and she absolutely nailed it. Amazing to see her growth over the last 10 years to the point where she now speaks with such knowledge and confidence. Privilege to witness. 😊👍 #ratata
