Faith deserves respect and honour: it has changed our lives, it has purified our minds, it has taught us the worship of God and the love of our neighbour. It is a blessing for all!

I knew that Saint Charbel had a certain presence in #Mexico, but I would have never guessed that it was so widely entrenched in the local culture. What does a kind-eyed, white beard monk from a country of 6 million people, who took a vow of poverty, became a hermit and attained sainthood from Pope Paul VI in 1977, have to do with devout followers in a country of 130 million people? In fact, San Charbel that was introduced to Mexico in the early 1900s by Lebanese #Maronite immigrants, has achieved an overwhelming popularity across the country with his shrines and altars that can be found in numerous churches in Mexico. The few locals I’ve spoke with, all knew about our Saint from Annaya and both churches I’ve visited this sunday, the Monasterio de San Francisco in the Centro Histórico de México, as well as the impressive Mexico City Cathedral, had San Charbel featured on large paintings or imposing statues. A San Charbel tradition unique to Mexico is his devotees' custom of hanging colored ribbons inscribed with their wishes, which immediately distinguishes him from other church saints. Given the state of deep despair #Lebanon has reached, I’ve been adamant that only a series of miracles would be able to offer us an exit to the multiple crises that are paralyzing the land of Cedars. So colored ribbons by thousands might be all what is left to us at this stage.
