Today, IFRC Regional Director @CharlesBusinge1 led a briefing with diplomatic missions alongside Somali Red Crescent Society (#BishaCas) on how we’re responding and why stronger partnerships are critical to save lives. 2/3 Rains have failed for four consecutive seasons, leaving nearly 1.3 million people in IPC Phase 3 and 4 as of December 2025. Acute malnutrition is rising, while funding gaps and reduced humanitarian operations worsen the situation.

A Uganda Red Cross Cross volunteer in Kagogo village, Uganda, Biringiro Fred goes door to door encouraging families to immunize their children, despite resistance from a local religious group that rejects vaccines and hides in nearby mountains during vaccination campaigns. The group relies on herbal remedies and recently lost four members to preventable diseases. Fred continues working with local leaders and faith authorities to counter misinformation, and some districts in the wider Mubende region are beginning to show improvement in vaccination efforts. #ImmunizeUganda #VaccinesSaveLives @AfricaCDC @MastercardFdn @MinofHealthUG @ifrc @IFRCAfrica

Today on #InternationalVolunteerDay, we honour volunteers serving their own communities with courage and compassion. We also remember the more than 50 Red Cross Red Crescent volunteers and staff who lost their lives since 2024 while helping others. Your humanity lives on.

During this milestone event, I reiterated that integrity is a shared responsibility and we should move from reactive to proactive building systems that prevent, detect, and respond to risks with fairness and agility.

Horrified & deeply saddened by the killing of 5 Sudanese Red Crescent volunteers in Bara. They were clearly identified yet targeted. 21 SRCS colleagues lost since the conflict began. We demand unwavering respect for humanitarians and the Red Crescent emblem. #Sudan #NotATarget

I am horrified, shocked, and deeply saddened by the killing of five volunteers of the Sudanese Red Crescent @SRCS_SD who were on duty in the city of Bara, North Kordofan, on 27 October. Another three volunteers are still missing. On behalf of the @IFRC, I extend our deepest condolences to the families of those killed and to their friends and colleagues. The Sudanese Red Crescent team was on an official mission as part of a food distribution team in the city of Bara. They were clearly identified by wearing Red Crescent vests, which are supposed to provide them with full protection, and carried identification cards issued by the local branch. Any attack on humanitarian teams is unacceptable.  We strongly reiterate our call for unwavering respect for the Red Cross and Red Crescent emblems and the crucial humanitarian services they represent. I’m inspired by what collaboration can achieve. During my visit to Mbaïki, Central Africa Republic, I have witnessed projects that will benefit communities we work with: a refurbished hospital, health facilities under construction supported by @IFRC’s technical teams.
