Today, I am reminded of the words of Dr. King's partner in the struggle, the great Coretta Scott King: "Freedom is never really won. You earn it, and you win it in every generation." Let us all commit to continuing the fight for justice for generations.

There's more to say, and many historians, sociologists, linguists have said it better and more clearly. Language matters. Recognizing enslaved people as "people" matters. And it's important to clarify that white male power does not singularly define "the country" now or ever. +

“We were and continue to be horrified by the devastating Hamas attack against Israeli civilians on October 7. Yet, in this moment of pain, we cannot condemn violence and the murder of some civilians while simultaneously justifying and enabling it for others.”
