This is the biggest reform to our Parliament in a generation. 🇬🇧 This morning, the 700-year-old system of hereditary membership in the House of Lords was abolished. Membership is now earned through public service and merit, not granted by an inheritance. ✅

@TrainGuardChris @DanielTrainsUk @ChimeWhistle @WestMidRailway And ArrivaTW/Chiltern did run a through service from Wrexham to Wembley… BUT, the route from Wolverhampton to Snow Hill (with a link the Birmingham side of Wolves station) is would have made a direct service so much quicker and easier.

@nsandhir @ZackPolanski The world is a dangerous place and we have a pathetically small Army, Navy and Air Force. Do you think we can just do without?

@theroyalistsuk There are many arguments against hereditary peers and indeed the monarchy - let’s face it, they haven’t helped themselves. But at least the hereditary peers generally understand their duty and take the role without too much political bias.

The Government would do well to recall that The King himself sits in Parliament by the hereditary principle they now seek to disparage. These are the arguments of those who hold our history and heritage in contempt.
Cabinet Office@cabinetofficeuk

Your inheritance shouldn’t determine if you sit in Parliament. The Hereditary Peers Bill, which was passed yesterday, will finally end the centuries-old hereditary principle in Parliament. Hereditary peers will no longer have the right to sit and vote in the House of Lords.

@MeggGawat I don’t know why I’m seeing this tweet but it’s absolute rubbish to say meat has no flavour. You just can’t beat the taste of crispy lamb fat, a juicy ribeye or a good quality chicken roasted to perfection.

Meat substitutes like tofu have been around for thousands of years made from plants. They use 90%+ less land and water and are healthier and no animal cruelty. Meat has nearly no flavor on its own, nearly all taste is from vegan seasoning, in blind taste tests no one can already tell any difference. Recreate all your meals vegan.

Since the first $325,000 lab-grown burger in 2013, prototype lab-grown meat costs have fallen by about 99–99.9%, to around $10–20 per burger.  I've tried them, and they taste just like real meat!

@RupertLowe10 You seriously need to rethink this stance as from a business point of view it doesn’t add up. Whenever this comes up I always ask the question, would they ever invest to automate? They barely even put the minimum money in that is required to maintain!

@ChimeWhistle Let’s hope not. Ignoring the railway enthusiast in me, class 37s are an integral part of railway operations and we would be lost without them.

@ZackPolanski There never was a war on drugs. You only have to walk through any town or city centre to see that. Government and law enforcement must break the supply chain at the very top, stop the imports and production. Problem is it won’t because of corruption at the highest level.

Drug deaths have risen every year for 13 years. That’s 13 years of a failed “war on drugs”. Labour should be looking at legalisation, control and regulation - not playing politics with people’s lives. This is a public health crisis. Treat it like one. Not a game.

@LeonPoliticsUK @TheGreenParty Fundamentally I guess I disagree with young people (or anybody else) “trying” drugs. Drugs will never be safe and will continue to ruin lives. At the same time there needs to be more research into medical uses which has always been hampered by what people see the drugs doing.

@CharlesTheGuard @TheGreenParty If it's regulated, young people just wanting to try drugs wouldn't have to go to a dodgy street dealer who endagers their life. People wouldn't have to live next to drug dealers. Drugs would be safe, and our hospitals would get a relief It makes so much sense Look at Portugal

@LeonPoliticsUK @TheGreenParty I share your feeling that the addicts themselves are not the problem but I believe what needs to be tackled is top level corruption - the “serious organised” criminals who are clearly connected & above the law. I can see why creating a taxable market appeals but I’m not keen.

@CharlesTheGuard @TheGreenParty Our drug policy puts people first. We don't demonise addicts, it's a public health issue. We will invest in rehabilitation, and regulation of drugs. Tackle street dealing, and create tax revenue at the same time. Investment in public services funds itself in economic growth

@LeonPoliticsUK @TheGreenParty I am very depressed by what I see. A large part of me feels the country is beyond recovery. I do position myself as a social conservative. I do believe in carefully managed immigration, defence spending, policing etc. I’d take a hard line on drugs. Tax needs a radical overhaul.
