NAS dealt with over 39,000 emergency 999 calls in December 2024 only, we expect these numbers to rise to 40,000 this December. Before calling an ambulance or arriving at a hospital ED, first consider Self Care, Pharmacy, GP Surgery, Injury Units or the Out of Hours GP Service.

In some cases, dispatching a first responder scheme is the most appropriate response. Registered Community First Responders (CFRs) are linked to the National Ambulance Service’s call taking/dispatch function. Find out more at becomeacfr.ie

Community First Responders (CFR) are volunteers who are trained to attend certain types of emergency calls in their communities. They aim to get there in the first vital minutes before the ambulance crew arrives. Find out more here➡️becomeacfr.ie

With 70% of cardiac arrests happening in the home , chances are it will be a loved one or someone you know who you will need perform CPR on. Little did paramedic @kieranmini know that at a family wedding he would find himself resuscitating his sister Eithne in her hotel room.

Each year in the UK, 1000s die from cardiac arrests who could survive if they had early CPR and defibrillation. But defibrillation availability is very limited. So if you can afford it, why do I think you should buy one? For the same reason you’d buy a fire extinguisher or a carbon monoxide detector or life insurance - some purchases we make are for a piece of mind and are based on a risk/benefit analysis. In the case of a carbon monoxide detector, for instance, there is a cost - around £25 – but a benefit, based on how helpful the purchase is (virtually 100 per cent in preventing death) and how common the risk is (30 deaths per year in the UK). With a defibrillator the cost is higher, and the equipment can increase survival by 70 per cent. But deaths from cardiac arrests are 1000 times more common than from carbon monoxide. When you work it out, on a risk/benefit analysis, defibrillators are three times more cost effective than carbon monoxide detectors. In this week’s Mail health section I explain why this year I will be getting a defibrillator for my home and why I think the government should get rid of VAT for business, charities and households people buying these machines to make them more affordable.

Well done to students Cormac Bresnan, Gary McAuliffe, Donal Forde, Aidan Liddy, Shane Lynch & Daniel Collins who played in the Tony Forristal U14 intercounty tournament in Waterford. They put in some great performances but lost the Shield Final to Kilkenny.
